Position Summary
EBI Consulting is looking for a Structural Engineer to be a subject matter expert for Seismic work as part of our due diligence service offerings. This position will require you to perform Seismic Risk Assessment (SRA)/Probable Maximum Loss (PML) and Property Condition Assessment (PCA) field observations of various property types, including industrial, commercial, and residential properties. You will perform independent research of local and state resources, interview persons familiar with the property, and conduct historical research to compile the information required for PML and PCA reports in accordance with ASTM standards and client specific scopes of work, including Housing and Urban Development (HUD). PML work will focus on the evaluation of buildings for expected seismic performance and risk, including utilizing industry standard seismic risk assessment software and methodologies, as well as reviewing available construction plans, soils reports, and other available documentation.
This is a full-time, salaried position, reporting to the Senior Technical Director within our Transaction Advisory Services practice. The ideal candidate will be based in a significant metro in the Western United States and comfortable traveling the region as part of a work-from-home environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary responsibility will be to conduct and review PML studies on buildings, including field work, data compilation, calculations, and report preparation, using SeismiCat or similar platform and the Thiel Zsutty Method. In addition, the successful applicant may also perform structural/forensic investigations of different properties, property condition assessments and construction loan monitoring
Minimum 10 years' experience with building materials/systems, construction or design, or forensic investigation
A breadth of knowledge of seismic design and retrofit requirements utilized in current and past building codes
Prior PML experience required
Knowledge of HUD and/or other government-related scopes of work preferred
Experience working in a fast-paced consulting firm with the ability to independently manage multiple projects
Comfort with being client-facing and presenting seismic information, as applicant will be required to communicate findings to senior internal and external clientele
This role requires superior interpersonal communication skills including the ability to ascertain clients' varied levels of PML prowess, along with their goals for a given project and deliver accurate findings that support those goals while maintaining the utmost technical integrity
Confidently serve as EBI's representative at local and national conferences and seminars to stay current with regulations and fluent in the seismic space with the ability to articulate knowledge to non-experts.
The position typically involves approximately 70% office time and 30% field time

A Bachelor's Degree in Civil / Structural Engineering or related focus; a Master's Degree is preferred but not required
California Licensed P.E. is required, S.E. is preferred. Ability to attain additional registration as needed

JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of the role is to lead, oversee, coordinate and manage the technical aspect of construction activities to ensure alignment with the engineering design. Key Accountabilities
Work closely with project managers, design engineers, Owner's Engineer, Contractors, equipment vendor & suppliers and Engineer's of other Stakeholder during project planning and execution to coordinate technical support and ensure seamless integration of HVDC, electrical and structural components. Communicate progress updates, challenges, and needs of project stakeholders through regular reports or meetings.
Provide daily technical support to construction activities, including the installation of converter stations, interfacing utilities, interfacing transmission lines, interfacing generation and related equipment. Support the supervision of the construction management team, an provide guidance to subcontractors to ensure tasks are performed correctly and on schedule. Monitor progress to ensure alignment with project timelines and milestones.
Ensure that construction work adheres to detailed engineering designs and technical specifications provided by design engineers and stakeholders. Verify that the installation of HVDC components (e.g., converters, transformers, main circuit equipment) matches the intended design and functional requirements. Coordinate with design teams to clarify ambiguities or address discrepancies in plans during construction.
Conduct regular inspections of materials, workmanship, and installed equipment to ensure compliance with project standards, manufacturer specifications, and industry regulations (e.g., IEC, IEEE). Oversee or assist in testing procedures during construction, such as insulation resistance tests or high-voltage checks, to validate component integrity before commissioning. Identify and support rectification of any defects or non-conformities in construction processes or materials.
Enforce strict safety protocols specific to high-voltage systems to protect workers, equipment, and the public during construction. Ensure compliance with safety standards such as OSHA (or equivalent local regulations) and HVDC-specific safety guidelines, including proper grounding, isolation, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Conduct safety briefings, risk assessments, and hazard identification for tasks involving high-voltage equipment or challenging site conditions.
Support the develop and preparation of specialized commissioning plans and acceptance criteria for the installation of HVDC transmission systems considering overall generation integration. Review commissioning results and accept or reject based on preestablishes criteria. Coordinate all commissioning activities across all affected stakeholders.
Support construction contractors in addressing on-site challenges promptly, such as design gaps and interfacing issues, unexpected ground conditions, equipment malfunctions or damage, material delays, or adverse weather, to minimize disruptions. Support the implementation of practical solutions to technical or logistical issues, such as adjusting construction methods for civil work, structural work, or resolving equipment alignment problems. Collaborate with project managers and engineers to escalate and resolve complex issues that impact project scope or timelines.
Support the development and preconstruction team in the planning and assessment of potential new projects. Support the creation of conceptual design and front-end engineering design activities, developing technical specifications, and evaluating proposals.

Requirements:
You have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
You have a P.E. license and your S.E license is a plus.
You have 15+ years of hands-on structural engineering experience.
You have broad structural and vertical construction experience (horizontal also is a plus).
You have construction management, maintenance, and structural design experience in residential, industrial, institutional, or commercial structures.
You can work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
You have excellent technical, analytical, writing, and communication skills.
You are willing to travel about 20% on average.
You have a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and the ability to drive.
Prior forensic experience is
not

Forensic Structural Engineer (Remote)

Our client is hiring multiple Forensic Structural Engineers for their Charlotte office. Duties include evaluation of the cause of failure, extent of damage, and recommendations for repairs to buildings that have issues related to weather (including winds, storms, hail, earthquakes, and flooding), manmade issues such as plumbing leakage, construction defects, and accidents, and other losses such as fires.
The successful candidate will be the engineer of record for investigations of damage to buildings and other structures. Specific duties will include:
Physical inspection of damaged buildings or structures
Interviews with building owners, contractors, and others involved
Evaluate scope of repair and repair options
Evaluate the cause and extent of damage to building or structure
Prepare written reports detailing findings, including observations, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations
Support findings in occasional legal proceedings as needed, up to an included deposition and trial testimony as an expert witness
QUALIFICATIONS
5 plus years of engineering experience required
Must be licensed as an Engineer, plus the ability to obtain licenses in other states
NCEES record helpful; must apply within six months of hire
United States citizen or be legally authorized to work within the United States. We do not offer or sponsor visas.
Must have excellent written and oral communications skills; our reports are our only product
Must never have been disciplined by an engineering board or licensing authority
Must never have been disqualified as an expert witness
Must be able to work independently, efficiently manage your time, and meet deadlines on multiple concurrent projects
Ability to travel and support project needs both in and out of state
Demonstrated intermediate-level computer skills, including Word and Excel. Basic knowledge of AutoCad very helpful.
Must be willing to work added hours after storm events such as hurricanes; production bonuses paid accordingly
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
5 plus years of engineering experience required
PE required
