Colusa County was established in 1850 as one of the original 27 counties created by the first state legislature.

1851

1851- First Proclamation for First Elections of County Officers.

1855- First Superintendent of schools - Robert Paine

1856- First sale of Public Land in the County at a Public Sale.

1859

1859- Colusa Lodge #142, Free & Accepted Masons was Organized.

1860

1860- Colusa County Courthouse built during the 16th President's Administration - Abraham Lincoln.

1861

1861- Post Office was established in Colusa.

1864

The Drought of 1864: The drought state-wide • Widespread loss of herds and flocks • Effect upon the introduction of grain-growing.

1866

1866- First Money Order issued from the Colusa Post Office.

1867

CHAPTER IX: IRRIGATION AND RECLAMATION — RECLAMATION: District 67: Formed in 1867 • Construction of the levee across the south end of Mormon Basin • District reorganized as District 479 • Present trustees.

1868

1868- First Board of Trustees for the City of Colusa organized.

1870

1870- Colusa County Bank Organized Reclamation District #108 organized.

1871

1871- First Shad put into the Sacramento River.

District 124: Formed in 1871 • Territory embraced • First trustees • The levee • Later trustees-Lapse of the district.

1873

1873- Colusa City Fire Department organized by Johnson Grover as First Fire Chief.

1874

1874- First Map of Colusa County drawn by J. B. DeJarnatt, Colusa County Surveyor.

1875- First Fire Truck for Colusa City Fire Department arrived.

1876- First Train to Arbuckle.

1877

1877- Post Office was established in Maxwell.

1878- First telephone introduced into Colusa County.

1880- Colusa Board of Trade organized.

1881

1881- Chinaman Hong Di was hanged by vigilantes on the turntable of the Colusa & Lake Railroad on 8th St

1887

1887- First Parlor of Native Daughters of the Golden West organized.

1891

In 1891, the counties of Glenn and Colusa were split.

1894

The African M. E. Zion Church: Incorporated in 1894 • At present without pastor or regular services.

1908

1908- First moving picture shown at the Criterion Theatre.

1910

1910- East Park Reservoir was built.

The Methodist Episcopal Church, South: History of the Colusa congregation, prepared by J. W. Goad for the semi-centennial of Trinity Church • Preachers in charge since 1910 • The churches at Arbuckle, Williams, Maxwell, Sites, Princeton, Stonyford, and Leesville.

1911

R. M. Liening • Water-front franchise granted, but not exclusive • Terms of the first franchise • Delays • Offer made by the railroad people in 1911 • Bonds placed with the people of the county • Articles of incorporation filed, Nov.

The Williams Enterprise: Founded, and published for a few months, in 1911, by R. R. Kingsley.

1912

The Maxwell Tribune: Founded in 1912, by Harden & Hardwicke • Publication under George B. Harden • Now leased to L. H. Bowen, and printed at the Williams Farmer office.

1917

THE AEROPLANE: Various flights planned • Flight at the Odd Fellows’ picnic at Grimes, 1917.
