The Court Procedures Team is a part of the Litigation Department and functions as a resource for litigators regarding the procedural components of their cases. The team provides procedural and filing guidance for matters in federal and state courts at both the trial and appellate levels, and executes all court filings.
What you do:
Respond to workflow requests of firm attorneys and professional staff relating to court rules, court procedures, court filings, and execution of other court-related tasking. Develop and maintain effective professional working relationships with court personnel, firm attorneys, support staff, and outside vendors. Provide substantive assistance in the preparation of court filings, compliance reviews on court filings, and the coordination of filing and service of various documents. Contribute to the development and management of internal resource guides to provide substantive and functional assistance to team members and litigators. Function as a primary resource to research and respond to inquiries regarding complex procedural or deadline related issues. Assist the Managing Attorney in firm defense matters which includes, but is not limited to, responding to process and subpoenas that are served upon the firm.
Who you are:
If you are right for this role you are independently driven to succeed and can function within a litigation department of a global firm with the requisite commitment and enthusiasm, but wish to benefit from not maintaining a personal caseload. Court Procedures attorneys are expected to be extremely active in the team's daily workflow, handling multiple assignments simultaneously. The ideal candidate will be eager to continuously expand his or her subject matter knowledge, and in turn, be willing to provide hands-on assistance to junior staff in both the execution of workflow and in expanding the subject matter expertise of junior team members. There is no “typical day” for Court Procedures staff - assignments may range from the preparation of all materials necessary to initiate a new action, and filing of the same, to researching the procedural mechanisms that would allow enforcement of foreign judgments. You must be dedicated to meeting the needs of the role, which occasionally requires a time commitment beyond typical working hours. Vital to the success and professional development of the Court Procedures Attorney is the ability and desire to become a subject matter expert that the firm attorneys can trust and rely on.
Familiarity with federal and state rules of civil and appellate procedure is helpful. The ability to effectively identify and analyze issues, and to reach sound conclusions on court rules, procedure, and jurisdictional issues, is vital. You must be admitted to the Massachusetts State Bar or equivalent (depending on the location of position).#LI-MS1
