The Medical Technologist at Harris Health will perform a variety of routine and special diagnostic procedures on clinical specimens for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You will perform high-complexity testing according to established procedures followed by validating and reporting the results of the tests performed. In this role, you will also aid in Quality Control, instrument and equipment maintenance, and maintaining adequate stock of reagents and supplies.

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related science or Certificate of Completion of Medical Technology Training Program

* Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing- obtains blood specimens via venipuncture and/or fingerstick, accurately identifies and labels appropriately; answers pneumatic tube system; follows procedures for processing and testing specimens, including operating various centrifuges; obtains other designated patient specimens as listed in procedure manuals.
* Result Reporting - recognizes errors or improbable results and takes appropriate action; reports critical values per Policy and Procedure; performs tests within established timeframe; performs laboratory testing, if designated, in the following sections: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; performs blood bank procedures, including crossmatching, ab id's, and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers according to established procedures.
* Performs, analyzes, and records QC according to Policy & Procedure following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; performs and records Performance Improvement indicators and reports results.
* Performs established daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoots minor problems and initiates service calls as needed; orders (or notifies assigned associate) and restocks supplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manual; dates reagents and discards expired reagents.
* Takes responsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth and continued education.

A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) uses education, experience and analytical judgment to perform the duties of clinical laboratory testing commensurate with the specialty and subspecialty assigned, recognizing technical and process problems and ensuring test systems are functioning properly and within expected parameters before reporting patient test results. A MLS will staff hours, rotate temporary on-call, as appropriate, and perform other duties as assigned to meet Laboratory, CCMC and CCHCS goals. Schedule is dependent on patient and laboratory need. Laboratory and Corporate Compliance, as outlined by the OIG and CMS, is an important aspect of our laboratories environment. Each employee is expected to be knowledgeable of, and behave in accordance with the Laboratory and Medical Center Compliance Plans. Patients served by Cook Children's Medical Center range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. Additionally, adults are occasionally served. Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology/Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science or an appropriate biological, chemical, or physical science and completion of a NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) program
Minimum six (6) months experience performing laboratory testing in a clinical setting to include tests CLIA-classified as waived, moderate complexity or high complexity
Graduates' clinical rotation can apply to this requirement
Pediatric experience is preferred
Certification/Licensure:
Candidate must be certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent nationally recognized certifying agency, or is registry eligible
Registry eligible candidates must pass the certifying exam within one year of graduation; failure to do so results in termination
