In June 1996, Saginaw General Hospital began exploring the potential of forming an alliance with another health care provider.
Established in 1996 by the consolidation of Fort Sanders Health System, Knoxville, Tennessee, and MMC HealthCare System in Oak Ridge, Covenant Health is governed by a voluntary board of directors made up of community leaders and medical professionals.
After an extensive period of analysis and investigation, a list of potential partners had been narrowed down to three in the spring of 1997.
On July 1, 1998, the merger was completed and Covenant HealthCare was formed.
In 2007, Rome authorized the Grey Nuns to hand over these remaining Powers to the Covenant Board of Governors, thus the Covenant Board of Directors today is both the Civil Board and a self –perpetuating Public Juridic Person (Sponsor) according to Canon Law, the law of the Church.
