Coweta High School company history timeline

1828

Doctor J. Palmore opened the county’s first school around 1828, close to the founding of the county itself.

1843

In 1843 Presbyterian minister Robert M. Loughridge opened Koweta, a Creek Nation mission school.

1848

Rainey and Smith attended Emory University and became the first students from Coweta County to graduate from college – both graduating from Emory in 1848.

1850

Loughridge left Koweta to supervise Tullahassee Manual Labor School, which was completed in 1850.

1861

The Koweta school closed in 1861.

1867

In 1867, the Creeks adopted a constitution which divided their nation into six districts.

In 1867, Smith became the first Emory college graduate to also serve as President of the University.

1871

He was voted out of office in 1871 but certainly made an impact during his short tenure.

1888

The Temple Avenue School, which later became Newnan High School was built in 1888.

1897

On May 24, 1897, the United States Post Office Department established a post office in the town.

1901

In 1901 Coweta was incorporated, and H. H. Lane served as mayor.

1903

In 1903, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad built a line from Tulsa to Muskogee with Coweta as a stop.

In 1903 Coweta reacted to population growth by planning a new townsite on the tracks.

1939

Central Elementary was opened in 1939 serving first to twelfth grade.

1941

Federal Writers' Project, Oklahoma: A Guide to the Sooner State (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1941).

1952

The new, and still used, Newnan High School opened on Lagrange Street in 1952.

1954

East Coweta opened in the 1954-55 school year and housed grades 1-12 for many years.

Board of Education in 1954, Coweta County began implementing the “freedom of choice” plan, which allowed students to go to the school of their choice regardless of race.

Central High School was originally built in 1954 on McIntosh Street in Newnan, GA. The building is now the site of West Georgia Technical College’s Central Educational Center Coweta Campus.

1955

The first graduating class was in 1955.

1980

1988

Later the school became a 6-12 campus until 1988 when Coweta County began the middle school concept.

When the new East Coweta High School opened in 1988, the former campus became East Coweta Middle School.

1995

Northgate Middle School opened in August 1995, in the back yards of Arnall Middle School and White Oak Elementary School, using empty classrooms from both schools and approximately 23 portable units.

2000

The 2000-01 school year at ECMS saw the faculty grow to over 50 certified staff members with a student population of over 820 students.
