1850 BCE - 1550 BCE Phaistos disk manufactured on Crete.
In 1669, the island fell under the Ottoman rule which lasted until 1897, when the great statesman of Greece, Eleftherios Venizelos, negotiated the independence of Crete.
Excavations were begun at Knossos under Sir Arthur Evans in 1900 and revealed a palace and surrounding buildings that were the centre of a sophisticated Bronze Age culture that dominated the Aegean between about 1600 and 1400 BC.
Crete was declared an autonomous state and, in 1913, it was united with the independent Greek State.
Professor Marinatos was the first to suggest in 1939 that the eruption of Thera, along with the associated effects, was the cause for the catastrophe.
Around 2000 BC a new political system was established with authority concentrated around a central figure - a king.
At the beginning of the Early Minoan period (3000–2000 BC) they began using bronze and making glazed pottery, engraved seals, and gold jewelry.
