The Credit Analyst position is responsible for gathering, analyzing, and interpreting credit information for existing and prospective customers in order to assess credit quality and to minimize risk and potential loan loss.
Responsibilities
Reads, reviews, and understands various financial statements to include but not limited to; tax returns, balance sheet, profit and loss statements, aging's, borrowing base certificates, debt schedules, equipment lists, business credit reports, credit bureau reports, rent rolls, lease agreements, fall cash flow, personal financial statement, environmental reports, and appraisals.
Prepares financial spreads for various types of commercial and real estate businesses and individuals establishing a direct obligation as a borrowers or guarantor.
Prepares credit memos for new or renewing loan requests that will be presented for loan decision. Has a thorough understanding and is able to accurately communicate the following aspects of the credit memos:
Financial statement analysis including trend, ratios, margins, sensitivity, and pro forma.
Cash flow analysis including traditional and UCA.
Collateral analysis including BBC review, real estate appraisals, equipment appraisals, contracts, and purchase agreements.
Guarantor analysis including cash flow, personal financial statement, and credit report.
Risk rating
Analyzes findings through underwriting due diligence and narrates information in a comprehensive analysis using a variety of data analysis (charts, formulas, graphs, etc.).
Analyzes the credit worthiness of a commercial applicant and guarantors through the review of financial statements and identifies key risks of the relationship.
Evaluates the credit quality and suggests proper risk rating based on analysis in the Credit Memo. Ensures relationships are appropriately risk rated during the underwriting process and recommends risk rating changes to the Banker in a timely manner.
Provides prompt turnaround on customer and credit requests, while communicating the status of loans in process with the Banker and/or direct manager.
Reviews and articulates findings within third party collateral reports to the Banker and/or direct manager.
Meets with and interview customers to develop a thorough understanding of the loan request and the business relationship.
Uses knowledge of the loan policy to detect deviations, exceptions, and variances on loan proposals. Ensures that all credit requests are properly approved or exceptions documented based on loan policy standards.
Assists the banker in completion of quarterly Problem Loan Reports on the bank's risk rated customer.
Completes annual reviews, risk rating changes, and other file comments to preserve the credit integrity of the loan portfolio.
Provides ongoing monitoring of borrowers' financial indicator covenants for compliance with loan documents.
Prepares various loan reports as directed from Credit Leadership.
Develop knowledge on SBA or FSA loan products along with policy and procedures.
Attends general credit analysis training provided by Credit Manager as well as RMA or MBA classes.
Complies with responsibilities as they relate to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti-Money Laundering Act (AML), Patriot Act, and Office of Foreign Assets Control Regulations (OFAC). This includes participating in any required training and promptly complying with all reporting requirements.
The position may require travel to various Choice Bank offices.
Performs duties outside normal scope as assigned.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Senior Credit Officer reports directly to the Chief Credit Officer and plays a key role in the loan approval process and overall portfolio management for their assigned vertical. In partnership with the Business Advisor and Underwriter, develop a comprehensive understanding of customer's financial needs, and formulate a plan of action for loan structure, monitoring, and servicing of loan relationship. Work with Commercial Bankers and credit staff to properly structure credit requests to achieve quality loan growth.
Knowledgeable of and ability to propose loan programs as appropriate (SBA, USDA, FSA, etc.)
Support the bank's growth and loan quality goals by ensuring that loan policies and procedures are properly adhered to.
Approve loans within the positions delegated credit authority and facilitate approvals for relationships requiring higher level of approval.
Manage workflow among underwriters, conduct weekly team meetings to discuss workloads and reassign priorities as needed to ensure timely completion in line with client expectations.
Provide day-to-day oversight, monitoring, and performance management of staff. Create performance plans and ensure timely reviews for all underwriting staff.
Manage ongoing administration of credit relationships through oversight of annual review process, management of ticklers and payment status.

Takes leadership role in analyzing and developing credit-structuring alternatives within all Digital Infrastructure (DI) verticals including regional, large corporate/syndicated/sponsor and data center/tower/project finance including businesses owned by Financial Sponsors and other non-traditional investors. Independently leads the underwriting and portfolio management responsibilities across all DI verticals while providing credit leadership to guide the work of credit analysts and portfolio managers, while interfacing with relationship management, capital markets and division leadership staff. Reviews and approves credit actions across credit team based on delegated authorities. Key contributor to the achievement of volume, fee income, credit quality and overall profitability goals through interactions with relationship management, portfolio management, capital markets, leadership staff, direct customers and financial sponsors.
Essential Functions
Provides leadership on negotiation strategies, due diligence and credit evaluation while being responsible for complete credit package and managing appropriate resources to meet internal and external guidelines. Provides appropriate technical, industry and functional knowledge to credit, relationship management, portfolio management, capital markets and leadership staff, including leading communications/meetings, direct interface with clients and leading overall credit process across all DI verticals and most complex debt arrangements including project finance structures. Helps relationship management lead negotiations concerning the presentation and development of complex credit arrangements. Reviews audits, interim statements, projections, and other pertinent financial information to provide expert analysis of financial trends. Identifies strengths and weaknesses of the borrower, lending structure and evaluates specific risks to the bank. Independently analyzes and determines validity of customer/sponsor business plans based on an assessment of the industry outlook, competition, technology, management, and capital structure. Determines appropriateness and approach to sensitivity analysis, to provide alternative views on key risks associated with the proposed transaction. Provides estimates of company and/or collateral value with thorough market analysis, discounted cash flow and other methods depending on industry sector.
Actively and independently monitors credit quality of high profile and complex accounts across a portfolio that spans all DI verticals. Takes pro-active approach with customer interaction, compliance reporting, research and evaluation to identify emerging trends/concerns and communicates trends and credit view with Relationship Management, Portfolio Management, Capital Markets and credit leadership.
Ability to establish, lead and maintain direct communication with borrower and sponsors to execute deal process, portfolio management requirements and meet compressed internal and external deadlines.

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Senior Credit Officer reports directly to the Chief Credit Officer and plays a key role in the loan approval process and overall portfolio management for their assigned vertical. Will be the primary contact for commercial lenders, underwriters, product specialists, and senior leadership for all new, renewals, and/or modifications of credit pertaining to C&I Middle Market lending. As such, they will be entrusted to maintain and ensure commercial extensions of credit within their purview are within Alerus' risk appetite, meet loan policy parameters and are properly managed. Position will lead and manage the underwriting team for C&I Middle Market lending, including performance management.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
This position is responsible for providing credit support to both Business Advisors and Underwriters on C&I Middle Market credit requests in the decisioning, administering and overseeing of commercial credit as outlined in the bank's loan policy.
In partnership with the Business Advisor and Underwriter, develop a comprehensive understanding of customer's financial needs, and formulate a plan of action for loan structure, monitoring, and servicing of loan relationship. Work with Commercial Bankers and credit staff to properly structure credit requests to achieve quality loan growth.
Knowledgeable of and ability to propose loan programs as appropriate (SBA, USDA, FSA, etc.)
Support the bank's growth and loan quality goals by ensuring that loan policies and procedures are properly adhered to.
Approve loans within the positions delegated credit authority and facilitate approvals for relationships requiring higher level of approval.
Manage workflow among underwriters, conduct weekly team meetings to discuss workloads and reassign priorities as needed to ensure timely completion in line with client expectations.
Provide day-to-day oversight, monitoring, and performance management of staff. Create performance plans and ensure timely reviews for all underwriting staff.
Manage ongoing administration of credit relationships through oversight of annual review process, management of ticklers and payment status.
Assist, as necessary, with regulatory and internal audit reviews and internal credit reviews.
Participate in projects as directed by the CCO as a credit subject matter expert.
WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent education, including upper-level courses in finance and accounting.
10+ years of experience working in C&I commercial credit, including approval authority.
5-7 years of experience in personnel management and supervision.
Strong desire to build relationships within the Alerus organization and effective working relationships with co-workers in credit and business development positions.

Help ensure the integrity of all the cash application systems and processes.
Participate in projects designed to improve cash application processes or procedures and/or processes and procedures that affect cash application accuracy and completion.
Establish regular communication of appropriate A/R and Cash Application information with the Senior Manager - Cash Apps.
Effectively communicate Cash Application information (metrics, performance. Areas of concentration/improvement) to all levels of management as requested.
Provide assistance to location managers, sales people, and customer service on cash application issues.
Establish and maintain positive relationship/communication with other departments.
Research and review customer remittances and deductions to assist with accurate application to the A/R system.
