Position Responsibilities:
* Supervises, directs, assigns and evaluates the daily work of assigned staff.
* Organizes coordinates and supervises the landscape crew engaged in the planting, cultivation, propagation, transplanting, trimming and removal of trees, shrubs, hedges, lawns and other ground coverages, asphalt and concrete repairs, drains, pest and noxious weed control using independent discretion and judgment.
* Responsible for inspecting and managing the quality and safety of all exterior areas of the entire Campus and the surroundings of its buildings, public and campus thoroughfares, including all hard surfaces (sidewalks, paths, hardscape), managing the university's tree inventory and irrigation water conservation.
* Plans type, size and arrangement of plants, designs areas, investigates new operational techniques, materials and equipment to effect improved and more economical performance.
* Responsible for the maintenance and repair of hand tools; power and vehicle equipment; fountains; the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
* Recommends to the Landscape Foreman selection for the purchasing of equipment, material and supplies including plants, biocides and irrigation equipment; obtains competitive bids and supervises all work done by outside contractors; assists in the preparation of the annual budget to accomplish horticultural activities and equipment purchases and repairs.
* Trains assigned subordinates in tree and plant maintenance, use of biocides, fertilizers, irrigation installation, equipment operation and safety procedures.
* Provides employee performance reports and evaluation inputs to the Landscape Foreman.
* Submits material purchase requirements to the Landscape Foreman, within the department and university guidelines and policies.
* Perform other duties as directed by the Landscape Foreman.
Job Requirements:
* 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience.
* Completion of four years of high school supplemented by at least five years of experience in gardening and landscape maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
* Specialized training in parks and maintenance, athletic field maintenance, landscape construction and/or landscape crew management may offset some required experience.
* Must be willing to work where herbicides and insecticides are present.
* Must hold or acquire required licenses and certifications needed for application of fertilizers and pesticide.
* Knowledge of chemical and fertilizer formulations and experience in their use is required.
* Must demonstrate hands on skill and experience along with advanced understanding of horticultural practices including pruning, irrigation, and fertilization; ability to identify and troubleshoot plants, disease and pests, soils and growing mediums and safe operation of power equipment.
* Must be able to perform and manage landscape maintenance, irrigation, fertilization, pest control and tree trimming.
* Must understand and be willing to follow safe working practices for grounds keeping work.
* Successful candidate must be customer and service oriented with competent and pleasant interpersonal skills and sensitivity to working in a university campus environment.
* Able to inspect and manage the quality and safety of all exterior areas of the entire Campus and the surroundings of its buildings, public and campus thoroughfares, including all hard surfaces (sidewalks, paths, hardscape), managing the university's tree inventory and irrigation water conservation.

Physical Requirements:
* The nature of the work may require exposure to inclement weather conditions and may require exposure to hazardous conditions and/or materials that may include feces and/or urine, used syringes, etc.
* Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the duties of the job including sufficient strength to lift 60 lbs.
* Must be able to walk approximately 2 -5 miles per day, personally inspecting and touring the entire Campus and the exterior of its buildings, including approximately four acres of natural/wild and often steep terrain on the north/west slopes of Lone Mountain.
* Possess normal vision, hearing and physical dexterity.
* Able to work from ladders.
* May need to possess the ability to measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where landscape work will be performed
* May require riding mowers and driving small utility vehicles.
* Must be willing to work in a variety of weather conditions.
* Ability to safely and correctly lift, drag and/or move with assistance large and/or heavy plants and equipment to truck bed level, and the ability to kneel, bend and squat for considerable periods.
* A California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Job-site quality: Distribute work among crew members, oversee tasks, monitor work quality, and serve as the crew's liaison to management. Identify irrigation issues and make suggestion, repairs and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Schedule week's work routes/very early dawn shifts to adjust for pedestrian traffic and busy parking zones to complete scheduled work.
Maintain flowers, shrubs, ground covers, lawns, hedges, and other plants: Plant, grade, seed and fertilize; mow, trim and weed; spray. Remove debris, water, and make irrigation adjustments.
Vehicles and equipment: Clean and prepare vehicles for the next service day; inspect and maintain equipment (includes lubricating as needed) before use to ensure proper and safe operation; report problems to the Supervisor.
General conduct and safety: Provide initial contact to team members regarding correction of inappropriate or unprofessional behavior. Provide immediate reporting of unsafe working conditions and/or practices to the Supervisor.
Communication: Build relationships with clients and property managers; serve as first point of contact in the field for questions and issues.
Training: Provide training regularly on the safe use of equipment, PPE, policies, procedures, and best horticultural practices to team members including AbilityOne participants

COMPETENCIES

Exhibit flexibility and knowledge to operate various construction equipment such as tractors, trenchers, excavators, compactor plates and trench compactors.

Job Description
We're hiring a foreman for one-of-a-kind, high-end residential projects in San Francisco and surrounding areas. Dowbuilt foremen are bags-on lead carpenters and the right hand of our site superintendents. They are responsible for reading plans and lining-out subcontractors and crew. About 50% of their time is spent on tools and putting high-quality work in place, while communicating expectations with precision and clarity. This position sets a well-rounded lead carpenter up for a successful transition into a superintendent role over time, while working with teams across the Bay Area, that are dedicated to the highest levels of quality and craftsmanship.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a foreman, you'll show an aptitude for leadership, build positive relationships, and demonstrate a willingness to go above and beyond to ensure that the design intent and project goals are met. You'll be responsible for:
Putting work in place; this is a bags-on role, executing framing carpentry, while also lining out other crew members and sub trades
Layout
Participation in quality control for all scopes of work - self performed as well as subcontracted
Assisting in creating site documentation and as-built drawings
Serve as first point of contact for subcontractor questions
Collaborate with subcontractors to find solutions; come to superintendent with possible solutions to problems, be willing to come to the table prepared and engaged in the process
Estimating materials and time to perform work proposed
Being able to run small projects as a working lead; coordinate crew to maximize productivity
Working with the superintendent to create daily schedule and take responsibility for its execution
Being the company representative when the superintendent is unavailable
Opening and closing the job site as requested
Discussing work with clients, architects, partners and inspectors with diplomacy, clarity, and patience as necessary
Maintaining effective, respectful communication with field crew, subs, clients, partners, and team, always
Minimizing material use to prevent waste and unnecessary cost
Managing material deliveries, handling, storage, and placement
Being a positive advocate for safety in action and attitude; reinforce awareness to reduce the risk of injury or citation and know OSHA requirements for your location and site
Maintaining a safe and secure site (i.e., ensure safety of all people, tools, and materials)
Maintain accurate documentation in the daily job log
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED
To be successful as a Dowbuilt foreman, you'll need:
6+ years high-end residential carpentry experience; highly competent and skilled in framing
The ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications; understand vertical and horizontal control lines
Advanced construction math skills
The ability to think ahead and see the big picture. Understand the WHY behind the work and how what you're doing today will impact what's coming next
Proficiency with proper use of tools and equipment and full complement of tools including specialty tools
Excellent communication and team-building skills
Ability to take and give direction
Technical constructability knowledge and experience with both traditional and new materials
Reliable transportation and a clean driving record
U.S. work authorization
The ability to communicate in Spanish at a conversational level is highly preferred

A reasonable estimate of the current hiring hourly wage is $45.00 - $65.00 per hour.
