1937

The State Highway Commission acquired Roche-A-Cri as a roadside area, a 300-foot-wide strip on each side of State Highway 13, in 1937.

1948

The park was transferred to the Conservation Commission and established as a state park in 1948.

1953

Nauts and her devoted friend Oliver R. Grace Sr., founded the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) in 1953.

1960

1960 - President John F Kennedy launches a panel to move away from institutionalization & toward community-based supports.

1971

The Southeastern Virginia Training Center in Chesapeake, VA, opened in 1971, as well, providing identical services.

In 1971, the Institute established its Postdoctoral Fellowship Program to attract outstanding young scientists to immunology and train them in the best labs under the tutelage of skilled mentors.

1975

1975 – Federal Law: Developmental Disabilities and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act) became law.

1975 - Arlington Community Residences, Inc. (ACRI) was established to manage existing group residences & expand in Arlington County, Virginia & opened our first supervised group home in Virginia for perople with mental illness, which became a model program for other communities in VA & beyond.

1977

1977 – WHAT A GREAT YEAR! Community Residence’s first group home supporting people with Intellectual Disabilities is established at N. 22nd Road, serving 12 individuals.

1978

1978 - Community Residences added three independent apartments for individuals with mental illness & hired a counselor to serve people in independent settings in the Arlington community.

1982

1982 – The first ICF of its kind in Virginia is opened to support individuals dually diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities & mental illness.

1983

1983 – The Mental Health Crisis Stabilization program opens & is recognized by the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI).

1984

1984 – Community Living Program (CLP) is established in Arlington to help adults with mental illness live independently in the community.

1992

1992 – Mental Health evaluations & services begin in the state of Maryland.

1994

Meanwhile, in order to establish a more formal network of cancer immunology’s international talent base, the Institute initiated in 1994 its Annual International Cancer Immunotherapy Symposium.

1999

Beginning in 1999, the model was first employed in what is now called the Cancer Antigen Discovery Collaborative (CADC), dedicated to identifying antigens in colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

2014

In 2014, the Cancer Research Institute launched a new website devoted to patients and caregivers called TheAnswerToCancer.org.

2016

2016 - CR's Day Program expands, offering Integrated Community Services to spend the full day in the community working on building job skills & other lifeskills.
