Cross MFG company history timeline

1949

Established in 1949, Cross is still privately owned and operates in the heart of America.

In 1949, James H. Cross and Charles R. Cross pioneered a new era of farming by channeling a powerful new source of energy - the hydraulic cylinder.

1949 – Cross Manufacturing, Inc. is founded by two brothers, James and Charles Cross, who want to make farming easier by using the power of hydraulics.

1954

1954 – The first building is constructed exclusively for Cross Manufacturing, Inc. in Lewis, Kansas.

1965

1965 – The Lewis factory grows to occupy nearly 100,000 square feet of space and produces 100,000 cylinders a year.

1966

1966 – Valve production begins at a new facility in Kinsley, Kansas.

1969

1969 – The Lewis cylinder plant is rebuilt after a disastrous fire, and production begins at a second cylinder plant in Lamar, Colorado.

1970

1970 – The Hays, Kansas plant opens for operation.

1970’s – Cross expands to multiple facilities in Kansas, Colorado, Mississippi and Puerto Rico, with affiliate ventures in Mexico and Australia.

During the mid 1970’s a need was realized for a specialist supplier of hydraulics components specifically to the agricultural machinery market that was then experiencing buoyant times.

1976

Cross Hydraulics was established in Melbourne during February 1976 as a joint venture with Cross Manufacturing Inc.

1976 – The Cross SQV sequence valve for row markers is introduced.

1980

By 1980 the company had become so successful that the Australian partner was able to purchase the American interest in the company and so Cross Hydraulics became and remains a completely Australian owned company.

1982

In order to keep up with the demands of an ever-evolving industry, John H. Cross, son of founder James H. Cross, became President in 1982.

1990

In 1990, Cross Hydraulics expanded its operations; opening a second branch in Queensland, Australia.

1991

In 1991, Cross Hydraulics expanded its operations further; opening a third branch in New South Wales, Australia.

1994

In 1994, Cross Hydraulics opened their fourth branch – in South Australia.

1998

The company has been ISO 9001 quality certified since 1998 and is serving the world from its three Kansas manufacturing facilities.

1999

In 1999, Cross Hydraulics expanded once again; opening a fifth branch in Western Australia.

2000

In 2000, Cross Hydraulics started a joint venture with Filtrec SpA and expanded their operation into Australia.

2004

2004 – Cross is recognized for Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

2005

2005 – The new compact DV loader valve is introduced.

2008

2008 – The first position sensor cylinder is released for production.

2010

2010 – Cross receives the New Product of the Year award from the Western Kansas Manufacturer’s Association for the position sensor cylinder.

In 2010, Cross expands outside of Australia for the first time.

2016

Hypower officially begun trading in February 2016.

2019

2019 – Cross celebrates 70 years of manufacturing hydraulic components in the heartland to meet fluid power needs around the world.
