Bill is best known in the real estate community as the founder of Cummings Properties, the suburban-Boston firm he established 50 years ago, in 1970.
Beginning in 1970, Bill Cummings had a vision for creating places where businesses could grow and prosper, and for supporting the organizations that contribute to a vibrant community.
Shortly after in 1970, Bill sold Old Medford Foods to focus on commercial real estate, and Cummings Properties was born.
To that end, he and his wife, Joyce, established Cummings Foundation in 1986 and began donating about 10% of Cummings Properties’ income to it each year.
One of the earliest major gifts was $100,000 to Boys Club of Woburn in 1986.

In 1995, the once-proud, but then almost defunct, site of United Shoe Machinery Corp.caught the eye of Bill and his team.
In 1996, Cummings Properties purchased the 2 million-square-foot former headquarters of United Shoe Machinery Corporation in Beverly.
In 2004, Dennis Clarke is named president and CEO of Cummings Properties.
In 2010, TradeCenter 128 is named Real Estate Project of the Year by Boston/SF News.
They did this, in 2011, by becoming members of the Giving Pledge, an organization founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates to encourage the world’s wealthiest people to commit to give at least half of their wealth to charitable causes.
Starting with 12 offices, it expanded by 2012 to more than 240 offices across three Cummings locations.
The year 2012 brought the acquisition of 50 Dunham Road, Beverly, a site that was formerly home to Parker Brothers and that Cummings has been developing into a substantial business campus, Dunham Ridge.
