General Duties : Duties and responsibilities common to all levels in the Custodial Series shall include but not be limited to the following areas: Custodial Cleaning: Cleans and maintains assigned classrooms, dining and assembly areas, hallways, stairways and storage areas, restrooms, locker rooms, shower rooms and other internal and exterior athletic and recreational areas, sidewalks and exterior walkways serving the premises, offices, meeting rooms and common areas (in selected facilities) cleans and maintains swimming pool(s) and pool areas in accordance with all standards a safety and health Uses brooms, mops, and light- and heavy-duty floor cleaning equipment to sweep, mop, strip and wax floors Uses any required procedures to control and minimize dust accumulation Uses vacuum cleaners to clean rugs, carpets, walls, ceilings and lighting fixtures, cabinets, lockers, furniture and window treatments Cleans and sanitizes toilet areas, washrooms, showers, locker rooms and drinking water distribution units Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, interior and exterior window surfaces, window treatments, doors and sills Custodial Maintenance: Performs lawn maintenance, weed control and basic landscape maintenance Maintains and regulates heating, ventilation, humidification and dehumidification, lighting, electrical and air conditioning systems according to the needs of the assigned building and its environment Replaces light bulbs Performs touch up and finish painting Performs minor (non-licensed) carpentry, electrical, mechanical and plumbing repairs Reports all major repair requirements through established channels and within established timelines Oversees maintenance work performed by School Department personnel and/or contractors and ensures compliant practices Executes the waste management plan including any segregation, recycling, cleaning and/or sanitation components Maintains driveways, parking areas, entrances and passageways as appropriate to clear snow, ice, standing water, leaves, debris and/or other impediments to safe passage Maintain and repair custodial equipment and tool inventory Security: At the beginning of each working period (shift), ensures that all doors and locking systems are functional At the end of each working period, ensures that all access and egress points are secured and that electronic alarms or surveillance systems are activated and functional Ensures that all operational service providers are appropriately registered upon arrival and departure from facility Code Compliance: Follows all applicable health, safety and code compliance rules, regulations and procedures; executes any and all custodial components of communicable disease prevention and control plans Raises and lowers Federal and State flags at appropriate intervals Controls all cleaning solutions, compounds and chemicals during use, prohibiting access by students and staff Securely stores all cleaning solutions, compounds and chemicals when not in use Facility Utilization & Support Service: Sets up, breaks down and appropriately stores furniture and equipment used to facilitate meetings, functions and assembly Relocates, retrieves and/or delivers furniture, furnishings, supplies and materials from one area to another Assists with breakfast and/or lunch programs as required Resource Conservation & Business Practices: Maintains practices that help to ensure economical use of all resources, including but not limited to fuel, water, electricity and custodial maintenance equipment and supplies Maintains current record of inventory levels of materials, supplies and equipment; follows replacement protocols Reports accomplishments verbally and/or records work assignments, progress and related details as directed Processes work requests in accordance with detail standards and within established timelines Qualifications: Knowledge of the practices and techniques of custodial cleaning A basic work ethic and initiative for continuing improvement Physical ability to perform an acceptable quantity & quality of work at all times A work history of dependability and reliability A positive and cooperative attitude Ability to meet attendance requirements. High School diploma or GED Valid Drivers license. Must clear criminal, physical and chemical screenings Ability to apply common sense understanding in fulfillment of oral or written instructions Ability to relate to officials, staff and public in a courteous manner Ability to acquire job skills with two months of on-the-job training Ability to lift and carry objects weighing from 15 to 25 pounds Ability to work occasionally in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow The salary schedule for this position is available at the office of Facilities & Operations.
