DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Custodian II classification is the more experienced class in this series. Incumbents may be assigned lead responsibilities over other custodial personnel in the absence of the supervisor. Incumbents in the Custodian I classification perform a variety of routine custodial duties in maintain an assigned school campus or other assigned District facilities in a safe, clean and sanitary condition.
Representative Duties
Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned custodial staff, student workers and community service workers; inspect work in progress and assure that work is performed in compliance with instructions and quality standards.
Perform a variety of custodial activities at an assigned school campus or District facility during a day or evening shift; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets.
Clean classrooms, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; empty waste receptacles; spot mop and shampoo spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.
Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; replenish dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows.
Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set and disengage alarms as appropriate.
Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs; respond to emergency custodial requests as needed.
Move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gym and multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings; set-up chairs, tables, bleachers and other furniture and equipment for special events or meetings; clean up furniture equipment and debris following these events.
Inventory, order, receive, distribute and store custodial supplies and equipment; estimate need for supplies and equipment; perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance to custodial equipment; maintain related records.
Replace light bulbs and tubes; clean chalkboards and erasers; empty pencil sharpeners.
Dust and polish furniture, fixtures and woodwork; perform minor repairs to furniture as needed.
Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, blowers and other equipment.
Operate a District vehicle as assigned.
Participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods as assigned.
Perform minor grounds maintenance duties as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to:
graduation from high school and two years experience in custodial or maintenance work.
LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Some incumbents in this class may be required to possess a valid California driver's license.
Satisfactory completion of pre-employment physical assessment.

Under supervision, employees in the Custodial Relief Program will be responsible for:

3. Maintaining recreational areas, locker rooms and specific exterior areas of buildings such as parking areas, ramps and sidewalks;
4. Operating scrubbers, buffers, wax applicators, burnishers, carpet extractors, pressure washers and other electrical, gas and manual operated appliances and equipment (e.g., leaf blowers);
5. Removing disposable waste materials from premises;
6. Washing interior glass, wall partitions and interior and exterior windows;
7. Caring for custodian tools, equipment and supplies;
8. Securing buildings as required;
9. Driving large vans (e.g. 12-person) and trucks in a safe manner; and
10. Performing other related duties as required.

Experience
1. Six (6) months (1040 hours) verifiable paid full-time custodial or janitorial experience at a commercial building (such as an office building, warehouse, retail or wholesale store, or non-profit agency or a commercial facility (such as a university, hospital stadium, auditorium, hotel/motel, etc.); OR
2. Certificate of completion of a Custodial Training Program equivalent to the City College of San Francisco Custodial Training program; OR

The Department
The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Building Maintenance divisions. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.
The Building Maintenance Division maintains 32 facilities totaling more than 563,000 square feet and over 275 acres of park land. The division provides janitorial, preventative maintenance services, and necessary building and related equipment repairs to all of the City's facilities, including interior and exterior work. The division also performs a variety of tasks, which include moving furniture, set-ups, and many other miscellaneous tasks as required.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and techniques used in performing custodial repair and maintenance; occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures related to the work; and techniques for dealing with the public, City staff, and representatives of contractors in an effective manner. The ideal Building Maintenance Custodian will also have the ability to maintain proper standards of cleanliness in assigned areas; follow written and verbal instructions; maintain basic records; and use materials, tools, and equipment safely and effectively form physical labor, including periodic heavy labor.
The Position
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):
* Sweeps, mops, waxes and polishes floors; shampoos and cares for carpets and rugs.
* Dusts and polishes woodwork, furniture, fixtures and equipment; wash windows, walls and other fixtures.
* Empties and cleans trash containers and wastebaskets; picks up paper and other debris.

Major Duties
Under general supervision, the Custodian may work independently or as part of a custodial team to provide general cleaning and custodial care and support for assigned campus buildings, facilities, structures and adjacent areas and/or portions, like campus offices, classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, locker rooms, showers, restrooms, health and child care centers, student residences, patios, entryways, walkways, and workshops.
* Work assignments include cleaning and maintaining assigned areas, based upon the location of specific assignments: dusting and cleaning all surfaces; removing trash and recyclables; cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and replenishing supplies; cleaning glass doors, windows, and blinds; removing gum and graffiti; cleaning furniture and upholstery; cleaning light fixtures and HVAC air diffusers; polishing woodwork and metal surfaces; cleaning interior and exterior stairwells, walkways, and elevators.
* Cleans and maintains campus floors, including sweeping, dry and/or wet mopping; stripping, sealing, waxing, and polishing floors; vacuuming; spot and full cleaning of carpets; responding to custodial/cleaning emergencies; gathering and delivering trash and recyclables to areas of central aggregation.
* Safeguards assigned areas from unauthorized use and access by locking and unlocking doors and windows; arranging and setting up furniture, equipment, and related items; identify and organize necessary work materials and equipment, which may include loading and unloading cleaning supplies and materials; and operating and maintaining powered equipment, tools, supplies, and materials needed.
