This Fellowship is for a 12-month appointment for two years. The fellow will have a unique opportunity to collaborate with other faculty members and receive enhanced support and mentorship. The fellowship is expected to transition into a tenure-track position (10-month obligation) after two years, provided the fellow achieves performance milestones during the fellowship.
Additional SUNY Plattsburgh support for the PRODiG+ Fellow includes: a reduced teaching load for two years (e.g., two courses per semester instead of three); monthly mentoring with a tenured faculty mentor during the two-year Fellowship; new faculty orientation and onboarding workshops; resources related to the academic performance review process, faculty benefits, and other monthly presentations.
Duties are expected to include teaching multicultural literature. Fields of particular interest include, but are not restricted to, the following: Latinx literature, Caribbean literature, world literature, Indigenous literature, post-colonial literature, diaspora literature, literature of immigration, and queer literature. Secondary interests may include English language arts and creative writing. Student advisement along with other departmental and university service contributions are also expected. The department is home to the English major including its three concentrations in Literature, Creative Writing, and English Language Arts, the college's First-Year Composition program, minors in English and Film Studies, and a Professional Writing Certificate. Search Number PJ # 7334 Title Assistant Professor, American Politics Category Academic Department Political Science About The Position: Expected to begin Fall 2026, the duties of this tenure-track position are expected to include instruction of three courses (e.g. introductory course in U.S. national politics, upper-level electives in American political institutions and behavior, and other courses related to their areas of expertise) per semester, scholarship, and participation in department and university service, including the academic advisement of a diverse student body with a large population of first-generation students. The successful candidate may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format. The Political Science Department is a small, collegial department that offers a wide range of courses in politics and government, preparing our students for a variety of career paths while developing valuable relationships and skills. We are part of the School of Arts & Sciences which provides excellence in learning opportunities for all students at SUNY Plattsburgh through a core liberal arts education. We train students who can think critically, have mastered their discipline, can communicate effectively and are broadly educated. Required Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Political Science from an appropriately accredited institution with a specialization in American Politics. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant's defense of their dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of the appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following the award of the terminal degree. An ABD will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (two years maximum).
* Broad training in American Politics
* Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching
* Commitment to institutional equity, broadly defined, in teaching, research, advising, and/or service
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administrators
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to lead a departmental redesign of the American Politics curriculum
* Interest in developing and teaching courses in areas of American Politics, such as: race and ethnicity; gender and sexuality; social movements; environmental politics and policy; economic equality and inequality
* Willingness and ability to teach departmental course offerings on quantitative research methods and/or research and writing in Political Science
* Potential to contribute to one or more of the following: the Department's major in Law and Justice; the Department's future major in Global Affairs; the University's interdisciplinary programs, such as Africana Studies, Social Justice, etc.
* Interest in contributing to the department and university through service
* An active research agenda, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and/or other scholarship
