Cytogentic lab seeks Cytogentics Technologist to complete Cytogenetics analysis of body fluids/tissues from human subjects to confirm or rule out a clinical diagnosis. Proficient in all routine and special cytogenetic technique maintenance of all pertinent equipment and lab organization. Make and receive telephone calls, communicate efficiently with hospital personnel/physicians/patients. Maintain laboratory records/statistics. Maintain cell lines and long-term storage techniques of call lines. Order and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment.
Enter demographics for Molecular genetics and fax and mail reports. Mail Cytogenetics reports
Dispatch of bio hazardous patient specimens(blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, etcl0 to the appropriate laboratories, Cytogenetics and molecular Genetics
Provide clients, health providers, external institutions and laboratories with detailed information and assistance regarding available test services fee information and transportation of bio hazardous specimens, etc.

Qualifications:

New York State Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or a limited permit is required.
One year training in clinical cytogenetics
A minimum of one year experience in clinical and cancer cytogenetic techniques required.
NCA certification and/or a master degree desirable. BA or BS degree (evaluated in the USA) in medical technology or life sciences required
Knowledge of computer skills



The hours are 10:00 am - 6.30 pm Monday through Friday.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

* Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures

* Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation

* Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls

* Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care

* Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures

* Assist with processing of specimens

Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology

* Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory testing experience is required at Technologist level

Performs difficult/complex tests requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in those sub-specialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience.

* If job assignment includes tissue culture: accurately and efficiently perform tissue culture of assigned specimen types, including culture initiation, maintenance, harvest, slide preparation and staining for microscopic analysis.
* If job assignment includes microscopic analysis: perform accurate microscopic/post-microscopic analyses of assigned specimen types, including preparing karyotypes using established cytogenetic laboratory procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Work Experience:

Physical and Mental Requirements:

* The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
* Microscopic analysis requires extended periods sitting at a microscope.
* Tissue culture and wet lab areas require extended periods of standing, sitting at a biohazard hood, or pipetting.
* FISH requires the ability to stand or sit for long periods possibly in a small darkroom environment.
* Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods of time.
* Frequent walking and/or standing.
* May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity.

Knowledge:

* Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge of job assignment(s) in Cytogenetics.
