D.A. Blodgett - St. John's company history timeline

1887

In 1887, the Blodgett - Clark project commenced at 42 Lafayette.

1889

The four-story “castle” opened in 1889.

1892

They organized under the name of The Children's Home Society and were incorporated in 1892.

1908

In 1908, the Blodgetts built a stately building on Cherry Street where children of all faiths and backgrounds received expert physical care and schooling.

Upon the death of Delos A. Blodgett in 1908, a colleague wrote, “The extent of his quiet and unheralded charities will never be known, except to the many who were beneficiaries of his kindness.

1911

In 1911 the board made a study of one epidemic and arrived at the figure of $100,000.

1917

In 1917 Blodgett Home became a charter member of the Federation of Social Agencies of Grand Rapids, which developed into the Community Chest, and later the United Fund.

1919

The first camping program was started in 1919.

1920

In 1920 the first social worker was employed and the case work approach to each child resulted in rapid movement of children out of the institution into foster homes.

By the early 1920’s, foster programs were established at both agencies.

1923

By 1923 the foster care program was an established policy.

1932

In 1932 the financial crisis of the Depression brought a local need for drastic budget curtailment and resulted in a merger of Blodgett Home and the Grand Rapids Branch of the Michigan Children's Aid Society.

1965

Mentoring programs in particular Big Brothers Big Sisters, were added starting in 1965.

2009

In early 2009, leaders at St John’s Home and D.A. Blodgett for Children began discussing the merits of a merger.
