D & G Dolce & Gabbana company history timeline

1958

Born into a family clothing business in 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily, he worked here from childhood on.

1982

The pair quickly began working together, and by 1982 decided to enter into business for themselves, setting up their own studio in Milan that year with an initial investment of the equivalent of just $1,000.

In 1982 they opened a designer consulting studio, which in time became their own luxury Italian fashion house, Dolce & Gabbana.

1985

Started in 1985, the brand made a huge debut on the fashion scene and has not lost any steam.

The label had their first runway show in Milan in 1985.

As part of Milan’s New Talent group, they were invited by fashion promoter Beppe Modenese to participate in its first runway show in 1985.

Founded in 1985 by Italian designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, Dolce & Gabbana creates menswear, womenswear, accessories and perfume/cosmetics, rising to fame in the mid 90s.

1986

Dolce and Gabbana now set to work on creating their first full collection, and in March 1986 solidified their reputation with the presentation of their "Real Women" show.

1986: Dolce & Gabbana debuts its first full collection of women's clothing.

1987

The company opened its first showroom in 1987, on Milan's Via Santa Cecilia.

Their favorite materials were crocheted lace, wool, and silk, exemplified by their knitwear line launched in 1987.

1988

In 1988, the company signed a distribution agreement with Onward Kashiyama, which opened the first Dolce & Gabbana franchise store in Tokyo the following year.

1989

In 1989, Dolce and Gabbana expanded their collection, adding beachwear and the Intimo line of lingerie.

In 1989 the Dolce & Gabbana beachwear and lingerie lines were launched.

1990

In January 1990, the company expanded again, launching its first Men's collection.

Dolce & Gabbana began to export their products to the United States and opened their first North American showroom in 1990.

1991

1991: The company launches a scarves collection, the first product to be made under license.

1992

The first perfume line launched in 1992, the same year that Dolce & Gabbana introduced a men’s collection.

1993

The brand achieved new fame when Dolce & Gabbana were chosen to create costumes for Madonna's 1993 world tour.

1994

The immediate interest in the group's clothing following that tour led it to shift into high gear: in 1994, Dolce & Gabbana created a secondary line, D&G Dolce & Gabbana, designed for a broader, and younger, market.

From approximately $50 million at the beginning of 1994, Dolce & Gabbana's revenues jumped to nearly $125 million by the end of that year.

1995

1995: D&G is launched in the United States.

1996

First launched in Europe, the D&G collection was introduced to the United States market in 1996.

1997

By 1997, the company operated 13 boutiques, in addition to a growing number of franchised locations.

1999

In 1999, the company bought up a 51 percent stake in Dolce Saveria, which, in addition to giving the company its own production component, brought Saveria's $58 million in revenues into the business.

2000

In 2000, the company took over the manufacturing of many of its formerly licensed products, including ties, scarves, beachwear, and lingerie and underwear.

The new labels first appeared in 2000.

2001

At the same time, the company launched its own collection of watches, D&G TIME. Another significant launch for the company came with the début of its line of children's clothing in 2001.

2003

While remaining committed to its privately held status, in 2003 Dolce & Gabbana took the unusual step of publishing its first annual report--in part to highlight its impressive growth.

The company also has been buying up many of its previously franchised retail sites, and at the end of 2003 directly controlled some 60 stores.

In 2003, the company continued in its vertical integration drive, opening a number of new, large-scale flagship stores, including in New York City and Las Vegas, as well as making its first entry into the Chinese market, with the opening of a store in Hong Kong.

For a men’s show in 2003, Dolce & Gabbana took inspiration from contemporary soccer stars, showing their ability once again to successfully mix time periods, masculine and feminine looks, fabrics and styles.

By 2003, this number had increased to a staggering $633.2 million.

2004

Not surprisingly, they have designed the uniforms and off-field attire for A.C. Milan men’s soccer since 2004, followed by signing on with other teams shortly thereafter.

2006

Olympiceyewear.com was founded in 2006 in the state of Utah as a sunglasses wholesale company.

2013

Stefano Gabbana was photographed with a friend Dell’Acqua in blackface at a ‘Disco Africa’ Halloween Party in 2013.

2016

In January 2016, the company started a high-end fashion line aimed at True Fashionista Muslim women featuring a collection of hijabs and abayas printed with daisies, lemons and roses.

In 2016, Dolce & Gabbana released a pair of multicolour embellished sandals for $2,395 as part of their S/S collection.

2017

Chanel’s 2017 High Jewelry collection is a stunning example luxury brands blending their own aesthetic with modern style.

2018

One of their most problematic and frankly racist moments was the breakdown of their major fashion show in Shanghai in 2018, but trust me, there’s more than you think.

Once again, Stefano Gabbana simply couldn’t keep his opinion to himself when in 2018, he commented “è proprio brutta!!!” which from Italian translates to: “she’s really ugly!!!” under The Catwalk Italia’s Instagram post of Selena Gomez.

It’s estimated that D&G’s estimated profits in 2018 were $1.3 billion euros, with around 30% of that coming from China.

2019

As part of their “DG Loves China” marketing campaign for their major 2019 resort fashion show in Shanghai, D&G released a number of videos as advertisement.
