Purpose of Role
Under supervision, the Maintenance Mechanic 1 performs all general building maintenance repairs. Has knowledge in basic electrical, plumbing and heating adequate to make minor improvements and replacements. Preferred to have additional basic knowledge in carpentry, masonry, and vehicle maintenance.
About This Opportunity
Joining our Maintenance team, the Maintenance Mechanic will be responsible for the following:
Maintain and replace sinks, toilets, urinals, and drinking fountains.
Perform repairs to furniture.
Repair and/or replace/install new ceilings and flooring.
Repair and installation of lighting fixtures, light switches, receptacles, and smoke detectors.
Perform various patching, painting, and staining tasks.
Minor drywall repairs.
Adjust and make repairs to door hardware including closures and exit devices.
Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment to include lubrication of pumps and motors, change filters and belts.
Adjust, minor repairs and preventative maintenance to boilers and ventilation systems.
Perform minor masonry repairs and concrete work.
Moving furniture, hanging pictures, banners, and other signage.
Assembling, repairing chairs, desks, shelving units, etc.
Maintain university vehicles and equipment.
Handle/assist with university event set ups and breakdowns.
Inspect buildings, facilities, and equipment to ascertain required repairs and make recommendations to supervisor.
Basic computer skills to operate software for automation system - view only.
Considered essential personnel - which means that this position may be needed at times when the University is closed or in an emergency as determined by supervisor.
Any other duties which may be assigned by the Assistant Directors or Director.
Shift: 7am - 3:30pm
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in building maintenance in a similar situation.
Valid New York State driver's license that satisfies both the University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a university owned motor vehicle.
Ability to drive a university vehicle for the purpose of performing university business on a regular basis.
Position is considered essential personnel and is required to work overtime and weekend as required by inclement weather or scheduled campus event as directed by supervision.
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
Ability to follow department Uniform Policy.
Willingness to work some Saturdays as part of a Saturday rotation of all maintenance mechanics.
Basic knowledge and provision of personal hand tools for building trades sufficient to perform minor repairs in carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Facilities Mechanic will be hands-on to do the day-to-day maintenance, repairs, overhauls, and have comprehensive mechanical aptitude. General Duties:
Performs maintenance on building mechanical systems including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, and building control systems. Also performs electrical installations and repairs.
Typical Work Activities:

Performs skilled work in one or more of the building or service trades;
Plans work, estimates material and supplies required, may read blueprints to determine outcome of work indicated, interprets diagrams, charts and specifications, requests supplies and equipment;

Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in the building or service trades; OR
Seven (7) years of experience in the building or service trades; OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B); AND
Possession of a valid Class D New York State driver's license with a clean driving record at the time of appointment. However, a Commercial Class A (CDL) license is preferred.
Minimum 3 years computer experience - knowledge in Windows and Direct Digital Control programming.
Knowledge of tools, terminology and practices of skilled trades.
5 years minimum HVAC experience with commercial type equipment, strong trouble shooting skills, experience with heat pump equipment.
5 years building maintenance, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, electricity or carpentry.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
Special Requirements:
Good knowledge of the tools, terminology, procedures and equipment of one or more of the skilled maintenance or repair trades

Qualifications:

Possession of a valid Class D New York State driver's license with a clean driving record at the time of appointment. However, a Commercial Class A (CDL) license is preferred.

HIRING SALARY:
As per the Association of Municipal Employees contract, the starting biweekly salary is $1,383.
The shift will be from 6:30am - 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Shift/Days and Hours are subject to change.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled position responsible for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of building, installation, maintenance and repair tasks in one or more of the electrical, mechanical or construction trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical repair, welding, sheet metal work, auto mechanics, masonry, sewage facilities maintenance, and municipal water distribution systems. General instructions are received regarding work of ordinary difficulty while permitting some leeway for planning the technical details. Detailed instructions are usually received for new or difficult assignments. The Maintenance Mechanic II, as distinguished from the Maintenance Mechanic I, does not have responsibility for implementing and completing a large project or the coordination of many activities or trade skills and is not required to possess as high a skill level as a Maintenance Mechanic I. The work is reviewed by immediate observation, periodic spot checks, having completed work checked, or by another step in the completion of the work. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of a Maintenance Mechanic I or other higher level staff member. The Maintenance Mechanic II may provide lead supervision over Maintenance Mechanic Ill's, Laborers, or other lower level employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Performs a wide variety of tasks of ordinary difficulty relating to the electrical, mechanical, or construction trades;
Installs, maintains, repairs, replaces and rebuilds electrical fixtures, equipment and wiring systems;
Installs, maintains, repairs, replaces and rebuilds plumbing equipment and systems including, but not limited to, faucets, toilet fixtures, and drinking fountains;
Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds sewer and municipal water distribution systems;
Performs steam fitting, forging, welding, sheet metal fabricating or machine shop activities;
Mixes plaster and concrete and is responsible for laying bricks and blocks, plastering walls, finishing concrete work, stone cutting, and related masonry work;
Installs and performs routine repairs of carpets, floors, ceilings, insulating materials, roofs, gutter systems, weather stripping, paneling, shelves, doors, windows and other parts of buildings;
Makes, assembles, installs, repairs, maintains, rebuilds, and refinishes furniture, floors, doors, walls, cabinets, stairs, and other wood products, equipment and structures;
Prepares, paints and/or refinishes wood, metal and other surfaces;
Installs, maintains and/or repairs upholstery, glass, clocks, meters and other miscellaneous items;
Performs mechanical repairs on automobiles*, trucks, tractors and other mechanical and motorized equipment;
Installs and maintains signs, traffic islands and places road markings using hand operated machinery or pre-formed markings;
Oils and greases equipment such as cranes, air compressors, and air hoists and performs necessary repair work;
Operates automobiles, trucks, air compressors, riding/push lawnmowers, snowplows and other motorized equipment;
Performs grounds maintenance work such as fence installation and repair, sign fabrication and repair, equipment (including athletic) repair, lawn cutting and maintenance (such as trimming, planting, weeding) and ice and snow treatment and removal;
Completes daily reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES. SKILLS. ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
