Purpose of Role
Under supervision, the Maintenance Mechanic 1 performs all general building maintenance repairs. Has knowledge in basic electrical, plumbing and heating adequate to make minor improvements and replacements. Preferred to have additional basic knowledge in carpentry, masonry, and vehicle maintenance.
About This Opportunity
Joining our Maintenance team, the Maintenance Mechanic will be responsible for the following:
Maintain and replace sinks, toilets, urinals, and drinking fountains.
Perform repairs to furniture.
Repair and/or replace/install new ceilings and flooring.
Repair and installation of lighting fixtures, light switches, receptacles, and smoke detectors.
Perform various patching, painting, and staining tasks.
Minor drywall repairs.
Adjust and make repairs to door hardware including closures and exit devices.
Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment to include lubrication of pumps and motors, change filters and belts.
Adjust, minor repairs and preventative maintenance to boilers and ventilation systems.
Perform minor masonry repairs and concrete work.
Moving furniture, hanging pictures, banners, and other signage.
Assembling, repairing chairs, desks, shelving units, etc.
Maintain university vehicles and equipment.
Handle/assist with university event set ups and breakdowns.
Inspect buildings, facilities, and equipment to ascertain required repairs and make recommendations to supervisor.
Basic computer skills to operate software for automation system - view only.
Considered essential personnel - which means that this position may be needed at times when the University is closed or in an emergency as determined by supervisor.
Any other duties which may be assigned by the Assistant Directors or Director.
Shift: 7am - 3:30pm
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in building maintenance in a similar situation.
Valid New York State driver's license that satisfies both the University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a university owned motor vehicle.
Ability to drive a university vehicle for the purpose of performing university business on a regular basis.
Position is considered essential personnel and is required to work overtime and weekend as required by inclement weather or scheduled campus event as directed by supervision.
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
Ability to follow department Uniform Policy.
Willingness to work some Saturdays as part of a Saturday rotation of all maintenance mechanics.
Basic knowledge and provision of personal hand tools for building trades sufficient to perform minor repairs in carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Facilities Mechanic will be hands-on to do the day-to-day maintenance, repairs, overhauls, and have comprehensive mechanical aptitude. This is a highly customer service oriented position in which employees should strive to exceed customer expectations. Perform Journeyman level skilled work in the installation, modification, assembly, maintenance, service, and repair of all types of residential and commercial hot water and steam boilers. Inspect equipment for proper operation, lubrication and cleaning, and follow a schedule of preventative maintenance to ensure facilities are in accordance with pertinent state and local codes. Perform a variety of maintenance welding tasks, rigging, plumbing and electrical trouble shooting.
Responsibilities
Operate, maintain and repair residential gas and oil furnaces. Monitor operation of unit and make adjustments to ensure optimum efficiency using flue gas analyzer.
Operate, maintain and repair residential and commercial boilers both hot water and steam.
Monitor them by checking water levels and pressures, testing low water controls, high limits,
over pressure switches and all other safeties including safety valves.
Trouble shoot electrical control circuits, low and high voltage, and replace necessary parts to maintain boiler's operation.
Participate in the design and installation of new boilers and heating equipment. Determine routing of pipe and location of equipment so it can be maintained and installed to trade practice specifications, blueprints and codes.
Assist in the decision of when heating systems are started and shut down depending on outside air temperatures to ensure lowest cost of operations.
Install and assemble new boilers which include wiring all boiler controls, gas pipes, boiler supply and return lines, feed water lines, and intake air and exhaust, and testing for safe operations.
Install, maintain and repair condensate pumps, boiler feed pumps and circulating pumps replacing seals, impellers and motors, float type switches, single and three phase.
Re-tubing older boilers which includes cutting out old tubes with torches, cutting new tubes to length, rolling new tubes into tube sheet, beading ends of tubes, and to perform a hydrostatic test to ensure there are no leaks in the work performed.
Replace seals, rope or push nipples in cast iron sectional boilers by splitting cast sections apart and replacing necessary seals and gaskets. Reassemble boiler sections torqueing to proper specifications, and perform a hydrostatic test to ensure there are no leaks.
Operate, trouble-shoot and maintain high efficiency boilers, gas fired domestic water heaters and steam operated water heaters.
Perform a variety of heavy and light welding duties involving working with black iron, cold roll, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast iron. Welding processes include gas welding, stick
welding, mig/tig welding. Perform other duties when necessary such as layout, fabrication assembly and finishes.
Maintain the boiler rooms in a clean and safe condition. Participate in the painting of boiler machinery and rooms.
Provide technical guidance and direction to supportive staff personnel including estimating costs for time and materials.
Provide assistance to other trades projects as directed.
Live out and make decisions in line with the Clarkson University values in all daily activities
Operate and work in a safe manner at all times and ensure the highest level of housekeeping
Provide mentoring and leadership to interns, apprentices and/or student workers
Willingness to take courses and/or training to meet trade specific and University standards
Complete Clarkson Vehicle Safety Checklist before vehicle use. Be responsible for care, cleanliness, and maintenance of assigned vehicle and report all vehicle concerns to appropriate supervisor immediately
Operate a Clarkson vehicle in accordance with University policy
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
Deliver timely, friendly, and effective service to University faculty, staff and students
Encourage and Promote Teamwork
Ability to gain general knowledge of the campus
Participate in reporting of campus damage and/or safety issues
Qualifications
Minimal Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications:
Associates degree in boilermaker related field
Journeyman card as boilermaker
Minimal Experience:
Four (4) years of journeyman equivalent experience as a boilermaker
Documented record of taking courses and/or training to meet University standards
Preferred Experience:
Four (4) or more years of journeyman equivalent experience as a boilermaker
Essential Skills
NY State Pesticide License (if individual does not have this, they must obtain within 12 months)
Must have enthusiasm for the job, a customer service approach and be willing to work in a team environment
Hold a valid NYS driver's license with a driving record acceptable to meet the University insurance standards
Proficient mathematical skills
Problem solving and analytical skills
Possess general knowledge of the campus layout and building locations
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong organizational skills are required
Must be able to function under stressful conditions and/or high volume with short turnaround
