Dahl's Foods Company History Timeline

1931

1931: Wolverine Thilbert "W.T." Dahl opens his first store at 623 E. 12th St in Des Moines for $600.

1937

1937-39: Dahl, who formed a partnership with his first wife's brother, Frank DePuydt, opens a store at 4801 Grand Ave., and two years later they open another at 2716-2718 Kingman Blvd.

1948

1948: The first supermarket opens on Beaver and Franklin avenues.

1950

1950: Dahl and DePuydt want to buy each other out.

1952

1952: Dahl opens the largest supermarket in the Midwest, a 21,000-square-foot store at Ingersoll Avenue and 35th Street.

1965

1965: The Dahl house, a 5,337-square-foot manor with an indoor swimming pool, is completed at 1 S.W. 56th St

1970

1970: Dahl sells all of his stores to an employee group and begins serving as a consultant.

1975

1975: The Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) is formed.

1981

1981: The first debit card transaction to buy groceries in the United States occurred at the Dahl's on Fleur Drive.

2002

2002: Dahl's closes a store at 6200 S.E. 14th St in Des Moines.

2014

May 9, 2014: Dahl's announces the closing of the Ankeny and Ames stores.

9, 2014: Dahl's files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
