1983

Late 1983 Cockrell Hill joins DART. The member cities appoint 25 governing board members.

1986

Late 1986 DART acquires 9.8 acres of land for the West Plano Transit Center and 10.7 acres for the North Carrollton Transit Center.

1990

This station was originally approved by the DART Board as part of the rail extension to Garland, but was deferred until warranted by new development and corresponding higher ridership. It was the longest single-day opening of electric light rail in the United States since 1990.

1993

The 1993 Fiscal Year (FY) budget mirrors cost-savings efforts and includes no employee merit pay raises.

1994

March 1994DART's Board of Directors retains its 30 percent contract participation goals for the Minority Business Enterprise program for Fiscal Year 1994.

1995

Despite the change, total passenger boardings (including charter) total 45.5 million in Fiscal Year 1995 -- only slightly lower than the previous year -- and passenger revenue increases by 9 percent to $25.9 million.

1997

The DART Board also restructures the March 1997 bus order from NOVA Bus to purchase more total buses and more buses powered by LNG. The new bus plan includes the purchase of 20 trolley buses manufactured by Chance Coach.

1999

The LRVs are scheduled to begin service in June 1999.

December 1999 For the third year in a row, DART's total ridership grows, with Fiscal Year 1999 passenger trips reaching 91.2 million -- a 6.5 percent gain.

They are scheduled to open in late 1999.

2000

May, 2000 DART completes the Southeast Corridor Major Investment Study (MIS) by finalizing the rail routes for light rail service to Fair Park and Pleasant Grove.

The project calls for a site to be used as a park and ride transit center with 355 parking spaces beginning in 2000.

2002

May 6, 2002 DART Rail pushes past LBJ Freeway with the opening of LBJ/Skillman Station.

Downtown Rowlett Station marks the first expansion of the Blue Line since it reached Garland in November 2002.

2003

March 2003 To give customers more value for their transit pass, the agency introduces DART destination deals.

2004

January 2004 DART marks 20 years of service to north Texas with a month-long customer celebration.

The $3 million facility, scheduled to open in 2004, will feature enclosed, climate-controlled waiting areas, vending machines, restrooms and more than 200 free parking spaces.

2005

February 21, 2005 DART opens the J. B. Jackson, Jr.

2006

June 14, 2006 DART marks the 10th anniversary of the start of light rail service.

2007

DART Rail was up 14.2% over June 2007 and the TRE was up 19.8% over the same period.

December 21, 2007 A new 14-mile HOV lane on US 75 extending north from the "High Five" interchange to Exchange Parkway in Allen is scheduled to opens.

2008

January 28, 2008 A 12-mile extension of the I-635 (LBJ Freeway) HOV lane -- from United States 75 (Central Expressway) to I-30 -- opens, roughly doubling the length of HOV lanes in one of the nation's busiest freeway corridors.

May 2008 DART had its busiest month ever providing nearly 10.3 million trips in the month of May.

The newly modified vehicles began service on June 23, 2008 with car #151.

2009

July 2009 DART's High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) network grows to 84 miles with the expansion of the I-30 West (Tom Landry Highway) lanes.

September 14, 2009 The first three miles and four new stations of the Green Line opened with service from MLK, Jr.

2010

The balance of the 28-mile Green Line, which will operate from Pleasant Grove to Farmers Branch and Carrollton is scheduled to open in December 2010.

A major staff financial review reveals that revenue resources through 2010 will not be sufficient to build 147 miles of rail.

The TRE is projected to carry more than 11,000 riders daily by 2010.

2011

Commonly known as Monroe Shops, the former train maintenance facility was built in 1914 for the Texas Electric Railroad and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It was remodeled, rebuilt and transformed into the police headquarters in March 2011.

May 2011 Representatives from DART and the North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority sign an interlocal cooperation agreement recognizing the importance of coordinated transportation planning and advocacy as the two agencies work to expand rail in the area.

July 2011 The Dallas-to-Oak Cliff Streetcar project receives environmental clearance with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issuance of a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on July 21.

October 2011 For the first time the Chair of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) is from Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

2012

December 3, 2012 DART opened two more rail segments on Dec.

The Blue Line extension will connect the downtowns of Garland and Rowlett when complete in 2012.

2013

April 2013 DART, The T and DCTA introduce the new Family Fun Pass on April 20.

November 2013 The D-Link, or Route 722, makes its debut with special stops connecting major tourist attractions and employment centers in Downtown Dallas and Oak Cliff.

2014

April 2014 Dallas Area Rapid Transit's two-year paid parking demonstration known as Fair Share Parking and implemented at Northwest Plano Park & Ride, Parker Road, North Carrollton/Frankford and Belt Line stations ended Wednesday, April 2, making it free to park at DART facilities.

2015

April 13, 2015 Streetcar travel between Oak Cliff and Downtown Dallas returned after a nearly 50 year absence, connecting a historic community via a state-of-the-art electric vehicle and a free ride.

October 26, 2015 A new collaboration between DART and the ridesharing app Lyft means North Texas travelers have a great new way to begin, continue, or end their trip.

The program began locally in 2015.

2016

May 2016 DART took the top spot and was crowned the Grand Champion at the 41st Annual International Bus Roadeo.

The buses, which will be delivered in late 2016, will become part of D-Link serving Uptown, downtown Dallas and Oak Cliff.

2017

September 2017 The DART Board approved the D2 Commerce/Victory/Swiss alignment as the approved Locally Preferred Alternative at their September 26 meeting.

2018

February 2018 DART expanded GoLink to Kleberg, Rylie, and a portion of the Inland Port in Southern Dallas County.

2019

July 2019 DART was named the American Public Transportation Association's (APTA) 2019 Innovation Award winner.

December 2019 Officials from agencies across North Texas launched a new nonprofit organization intended to develop transportation opportunities in the growing Dallas County Inland Port.

2020

August 2020 The Engineering Department at DART began installing face mask and hand sanitizer dispensers on all buses, light rail vehicles and streetcars.

The D2 Subway project reached another important milestone with the completion of the 30% level of preliminary design on October 30, 2020.

2021

June 2021 On Monday, June 14, DART celebrated 25 years of providing light rail service to the residents of North Texas.
