The Research Nurse in collaboration with the physician, is responsible for the implementation and evaluation of clinical research in their specific program/area. The CRN has expert knowledge of cancer as a disease process, cancer treatment modalities (or comparable knowledge for a non-oncology area, e.g. infection control) and the process of conducting medical clinical research. In addition, the CRN utilizes evidence-based nursing practice and has expertise in developing and coordinating a plan of care designed to meet the physical, psychological, and social needs of those cancer patients and their families undergoing therapy in a clinical research trial. Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are required. Knowledge of current literature and a commitment to continued learning are also required. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary across the different programs/areas.
This position is full time onsite in Boston.

Administrative:
+ Assists principal investigator with protocol development.
+ Assists principal investigator as appropriate with the Institute's protocol review process.
+ Assists the principal investigator in developing the protocol budget.
+ Collaborates with the Dana-Farber Harvard Cancer Center DFHCC quality assurance of clinical trials office in developing protocol specific materials.
+ Serves as research coordinator for National Cancer Institute, pharmaceutical-sponsored, and National Cooperative Group protocols.
Research:
+ Assists with recruitment and registration of patients to clinical trials.
+ Coordinates scheduling of patient's laboratory and radiographic assessments, admissions and clinic visits.
+ Monitors test results as appropriate.
+ Coordinates protocol data management as necessary.
+ Collaborates with staff within the Institute and with outside organizations in the completion of
+ clinical research trials.
Clinical:
+ Coordinates study enrollment, protocol treatment, and completion of study requirements for patients participating in clinical trials.
+ Works collaboratively and functions as an effective member of the health care team.
+ Collaborates with Care Coordination for all patient care referrals.
+ Collaborates with primary nurse in assuring that patient care needs are met.
+ Provides protocol education to patients and families; adapts interactions based on age-specific needs of the patient.
+ Collects and prepares required specimens for analysis and monitors test results, as appropriate.
+ Documents in charts as appropriate and communicates observations and findings to protocol investigator and attending physicians.
+ Provides protocol in-service training and serves as a resource to the health care team.
+ Monitors the environment of care with attention to patient safety, and assures compliance with regulatory agency standards.
+ Maintains clinical practice that is evidence-based and consistent with nursing policies, procedures, licensure/registration requirements, and professional scope and standards.
+ Participates in QA/QI projects for the clinical program and the Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services.

The Vascular Access Service at Boston Children's Hospital provides vascular access care to patients and families across the lifespan. This program places 14,000 PIVCs and 800 PICCs annually throughout the enterprise, including critical care, emergency department, inpatient units, procedural areas, and ambulatory care settings. Phase 1 of orientation includes 12 weeks of training on PIVC Insertion, phlebotomy, dressing changes, and management of vascular access device complications. PICC training is encompassed in phase two, which begins after at least one year of experience; this entails a minimum of 12-16 weeks of simulation and hands-on experience.
Key Responsibilities
Insertion of vascular access devices, including PIVCs and PICCs, using transillumination devices, ultrasound guidance, and ECG technology.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), in the Division of Newborn Medicine, is a Level III/IV, 30-bed referral center for critically ill infants requiring complex medical and surgical care. Highly specialized physicians, nurses, and support staff collaborate in the care of critically ill infants and their families. A team from multiple specialties within the hospital provides advanced therapies and family centered care for infants from around the region and the world.
We work closely with the Fetal Care and Surgery Center to coordinate both prenatal consultation and postnatal intensive care for infants with a wide range of prenatally diagnosed conditions. Neonatology attendings, fellows, pediatric surgical residents, and either neonatal nurse practitioners or pediatrician hospitalists are available on the unit 24 hours a day.
Key Responsibilities:
Providing care to critically ill medical and surgical neonates and infants with various conditions including (but not limited to) complications of prematurity, respiratory distress, pulmonary hypertension, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, long gap esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, gastroschisis, omphalocele, necrotizing enterocolitis, congenital heart disease and other congenital anomalies.
Working collaboratively to provide family-centered care as a member of a multidisciplinary team that provides expert neonatal care.

Interventional radiology is a minimally invasive way of assessing disease and delivering targeted treatments. Interventional radiologists are board-certified physicians with advanced training in minimally invasive therapy guided by imaging tools such as fluoroscopy (X-ray), computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound. Many diseases that once required surgical treatment can be treated non-surgically by interventional radiologists with less risk, less pain, and faster recovery time. Key Responsibilities:
Managing patients in Interventional Radiology throughout the continuum of care.
Patient assessment, procedural care, and recovery from anesthesia.
Interventional radiology is a procedural unit that operates Monday-Friday for scheduled cases and covers emergencies on off hours for both ambulatory and inpatients. IR performs a wide range of sterile and non-sterile procedures using minimally invasive techniques; Some examples include Angiography, Sclerotherapy, Embolization, Needle Biopsy, Vascular Access, Cryoablation, Radiofrequency Ablation, thrombectomy, and Gastrojejunostomy exchanges.
Working 10-hour day and evening shifts, 30 hours per week between the hours of 6:00am - 7:00pm Monday - Friday and call rotations.
On Call rotations for nights/weekends/holidays are typically 2 - 3 weeknights/month, 6 - 7 weekends a year, and 1 holiday/year.
Must be able to report to the hospital within 45 minutes when on call.
