On January 8, 1971, Dance Theatre of Harlem made its official New York City debut at the Guggenheim Museum. “The Guggenheim performance was incredible.
In 1971, Dance Theatre of Harlem, billed as a “neo-classical ballet company,” officially debuted at the Guggenheim Museum to great acclaim.
In 1972 the DTH school moved to its permanent home at 466 West 152nd Street, where training in dance, choreography, and music supplemented outreach programs bringing dance to senior citizens and children of the Harlem community with special needs.
After a prizewinning television special that Mitchell choreographed, Rythmetron, the company had their first full season in New York in 1974.

Mitchell started Dance Theatre of Harlem with a strong base, and by 1979 it was touring internationally with a repertoire of 46 ballets.
Welcome back! Dance Theatre of Harlem first came to Northrop over 40 years ago in 1981.
In 1988 DTH embarked on a five-week tour of the USSR, playing sold-out performances in Moscow, Tbilisi, and Leningrad, where the company received a standing ovation at the famed Kirov Theatre.
Completed in 1989, it was commissioned by Arthur Mitchell to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary.
In 1990, faced with a $1.7 million deficit, DTH was forced to cancel its New York season and lay off dancers, technicians, and administrative staff for a six-month period.
By 1993 DTH had become a world-renowned company with forty-nine dancers, seventy-five ballets in its repertory, an associated school, and an international touring schedule.
His story was all but forgotten by history when, in 1994, a reporter found him living in a homeless shelter, alone and destitute.
In 1994 DTH completed a $6 million expansion and renovation project, which doubled classroom and administrative space and confirmed the DTH commitment to provide access to the disciplined training necessary for a career in classical ballet.

PBT + DTH is back! After an exciting partnership in 2017, Dance Theatre of Harlem returns to Pittsburgh to share the stage with PBT at the August Wilson Cultural Center once again.
