  • People Operations & Talent Manager

    Dandelion Chocolate 3.8company rating

Dandelion Chocolate job in San Francisco, CA

About Us Dandelion Chocolate is a bean-to-bar chocolate factory in San Francisco's Mission District. We make chocolate from only two ingredients, cocoa beans and cane sugar, and travel to origins as often as we can to build good, trusting relationships with farmers. Our mission wouldn't be possible without a people-first culture that thrives on hard work, trust, and integrity. Many of our tenured team members stay for years because they feel invested, developed, and known. Our recruiting team has an unusually high bar: every hire shapes our long-term culture, so we look beyond bullet points on résumés to find individuals with both the technical and people skills to invest in our craft chocolate community for the long-term. About the Job This is not a typical recruiting or operations role. Reporting to the CXO, you'll step into one of the most interesting People Operations apprenticeships - where your early exposure to sensitive and strategic information - including exit interviews, performance reviews, labor budgets, leadership planning - will accelerate your judgment far beyond traditional recruiting roles. The core of People Operations starts with talent and team building. You'll champion our tradition of thoughtful hiring, long tenures, internal promotions, and investing in our people. None of this happens by chance. Professional development starts with successful onboarding so team members know how to engage with our internal programs. Longevity comes from understanding each team member's motivations and aligning their aspirations with Dandelion's long-term goals. When the fit is right, our craft chocolate and chocolate experiences reflect that harmony. With your guidance, we'll continue building one of the most celebrated companies in San Francisco that will endure for a hundred years or more - one thoughtful hire at a time. About You You're not drawn to flashy funnels, quotas, or time-to-hire metrics - you're motivated by crafting an organization that will be stronger a year from now because of the people you helped hire today. You're steady, trustworthy, and quietly ambitious - the kind of person others look up to when things get complicated. Our ideal leader has the patience to invest in a multi-year craft; the intuition to spot non-traditional candidates (e.g. a florist for a chocolate maker role, a high school soccer coach for fulfillment); and the resilience to keep candidates, teammates, and managers aligned during high-stakes holiday seasons. You're curious, kind, humble, and known for your work ethic. You show up when things get tough and set a tone of calm reliability. Whether you're early in your career and curious to learn People Operations from first principles, or more experienced and ready to deepen your practice in an organization that values talent as a high-level strategic imperative, you'll roll up your sleeves and lead by example. Every résumé you review and every reference call you make will shape our culture for years to come. Responsibilities Recruiting & Team Building - Our organizational successes and setbacks can always be traced back to how we hired and onboarded. Research sourcing strategies, schedule and conduct initial phone screens, maintain detailed notes for the hiring manager to review later to make sound hiring decisions. Schedule reference checks with candidate contacts so that we can hire our candidates with full confidence. It takes 18-24 months to see how the team you hired years ago is performing today. You'll have the rare opportunity to shadow the outgoing People Operations leader to see our peak operations humming before taking on those reins in 2026. You will have confidential access to reviews, exit interviews, company all-hands surveys, and other performance information so you can develop your sensitivity and expertise for talent. We are passionate about recruiting, view it as a key part of our strategy, will train you, and are therefore looking for someone who intends to commit and grow with Dandelion for the long-term. You'll also co-host company-wide interview training sessions, work with managers to regularly update job descriptions, orchestrate first-day experiences which include signed cards, onboarding boxes, configured email accounts, and a 90-day plan. Most of all, build a world-class team that takes pride in their work, consistently hits goals, and is excited to adapt and grow with Dandelion. Seasonal Staffing - You'll phone screen, hire, and onboard permanent and seasonal café, retail, fulfillment, and packaging roles as well as work with seasonal agencies to flex to holiday demand. Just a few weeks in November and December can represent more than 50% of our sales. You'll be responsible for developing a strategy that will allow us to double our team size with the help of agencies, recruiting, and coordinating teamwork throughout the holidays. Candidate Experience - Candidates believe actions over words. Our dedication to excellence is evident when candidates receive confirmed interview times, are guided with an introductory tour of the factory, sit down to a clean table with water carafes, and receive a response within 7 days. Even if the role isn't the right fit, your warm demeanor & buttoned-up process makes candidates excited to apply again. People Operations & Growth Opportunities - A key part of this role is talent building and recruiting, especially during the holiday season. During other parts of the year, you'll support other People Operations work-helping team members with timeclocks, coordinating with our IT partners to repair laptops, organizing professional development classes, hosting onboarding and All Hands events, conducting annual surveys, and lifting morale with holiday gifts or team lunches throughout the year. No two days look the same, but each one strengthens your foundation to grow into a long-term People Operations leader with us. People Operations at Dandelion spans many disciplines - recruiting, benefits and compliance, professional development, leveling, IT and facilities, community and neighbor relations, and, on occasion, personnel matters. No one person can do everything, so you'll collaborate closely with our CXO, legal advisors, IT agencies, seasonal recruiters, and long-time HR colleagues as you build your expertise and eventually specialize in an area. You'll also gain exposure to complex personnel conversations so that you can learn from real examples and develop judgment for future leadership. While we believe in offering second chances, we maintain clear boundaries and very little tolerance for toxic behavior. You won't be responsible for managing personnel issues directly, but you'll be part of discussions that will deepen your understanding of how a healthy, high-trust culture is maintained. Exec Relations - You'll report to the CXO and interface regularly with the CEO, CFO, and COO. Send weekly emails that track annual turnover, candidate funnels, and overall team health. Ensure that the CFO is informed of roles currently being hired for so she can account for it in our labor forecast. Coordinate with our COO to ensure we can staff for peak holiday operations. Connect with the CEO to make sure the onboarding process reflects the values of the organization and has up-to-date information. Leadership Support - Work hand-in-hand with busy managers to understand what traits they prioritize in candidates and to make sure you're able to accurately describe the role during phone interviews. You know that your success depends upon managers trusting you to build their team. You'll be working with leaders when they are short-staffed and likely not at their best - you may need to track down late interview notes or assist them with a 90-day plan. We're looking for someone who can de-escalate and de-stress harried managers with an even-keeled, fair, and can-do attitude. Other tasks as necessary - Our culture is defined by being kind, humble, and no one is above doing work. We are a small team and, especially during the holidays, everyone pitches in to help each other. You can be depended upon to pick up new skills as necessary for the role and to follow through without reminders. Requirements Professionalism - You bring calm judgment and professionalism to sensitive situations and never traffic in gossip or speculation. Commitment & discretion - Whether you are early in your career or more seasoned, you've demonstrated follow-through and reliability in whatever environments you've been part of - through leadership, community involvement, or professional roles. You handle sensitive information with maturity and good judgment. Previous experience in roles requiring discretion, mediation, or confidentiality is a plus. Organizational skills - You're a can-do, buttoned-up person who likes punctuality, responds to emails within 24 hours, and has no problem keeping track of the flow of résumés, cover letters, and interviewer notes. Writing & typing skills - When you aren't sure whether you pore, poor, or pour over a résumé, you look it up and ensure that candidates receive grammatically correct replies with no misspellings or typos. We type as we conduct phone screens so we can preserve as much detail for the hiring manager as possible. If you're a hunt-and-peck typer, this is not the role for you! Fluent computer skills - You keep candidate notes and personnel details organized in Google Suite. You use calendar reminders and email filters to stay on top of candidate responses. You can use basic formulas in Google Spreadsheets to help with leveling. Team skills - You can read a room and pick up on unspoken interpersonal dynamics. You can neutralize politics and ask the right questions to align the team. You'll have firsthand exposure to our most sensitive internal operations, a seat at the executive table, and the rare opportunity to help shape a culture from the inside out. We're looking for someone who brings out the best in others, meets people where they are, and ensures that as our craft chocolate operations scale, so does what makes our culture special. Experience is valued but not more than heart, humility, and good judgment. Benefits We are proud to offer a variety of benefits and perks that our team members enjoy. All team members receive paid time off for vacation and sick time. We also offer an industry-leading subsidy on medical, dental, and vision insurance through Kaiser, Blue Shield, and the Guardian. We offer a 30% discount on all Dandelion products, a $150 annual Dandelion Chocolate gift card, chocolate and pastry tasting opportunities, free beverages and snacks, FSA benefits, commuter benefits, professional development training, safety shoe reimbursement for qualifying positions, CPR training, safety training, trips to origin, opportunities to travel to our Japan locations, and paid time to work on manager-approved internal committees that are essential to the organization. How to Apply Dandelion Chocolate is growing and we are invested in team members who take ownership over their role in order to contribute in a bigger way with us. You will stand out from the crowd if your résumé is accompanied by a cover letter summarizing your greatest contribution to a team or culture. We look forward to hearing from you. • Lead Chocolate Maker

    Dandelion Chocolate 3.8company rating

Dandelion Chocolate job in San Francisco, CA

Job Title: Lead Chocolate Maker Hours: 40 hours/ week, 7:30am-4pm, weekends required Department: Chocolate Production - 16th Street Reports to: Production Manager Pay rate: Starts at $70,000/year, non-exempt About Us Dandelion Chocolate is a bean-to-bar chocolate factory in San Francisco's Mission District. We make chocolate from only two ingredients, cocoa beans and cane sugar, and travel to origins as often as we can to build good, trusting relationships with the producers who grow and ferment the beans we buy. We're always searching for good cocoa beans, and now we're looking for a Lead Chocolate Maker to help our production team craft small batches of chocolate. A Day in the Life Lead Chocolate Makers are core to the success of the Chocolate Production day. Your day starts at 7:30am where you refine a few bins of chocolate so we have enough material to meet our Ball Mill goals for the day. At 8am huddle, we review the daily plans, taste test a new origin roasting profile, and ensure the team is set up for success to meet our highest quality standards. Today you lead the Ball Mill operations, confidently loading the correct materials in each machine, using a grindometer to confirm our quality standards, and tasting each batch to ensure it meets our target taste profile. You step away for a few minutes to troubleshoot the bean sorting machine with an Apprentice Chocolate Maker, noting a new setting that is a little bit slower but gives better, cleaner yields for a new origin. At the end of the day, you gather the team to review what goals were met, what hiccups happened along the way, and what steps can be improved as we continuously seek to perfect the chocolate making process. Candidates must have stellar leadership skills and a great attitude. This full time role starts at $70,000/year. About You You are fascinated by all things chocolate, and feel great satisfaction helping your team work hard and fast towards measurable goals. You can prioritize tasks and effectively organize your team to achieve daily goals. As the day evolves, you are able to quickly pivot and shift priorities as a machine breaks or a team member gets pulled into a meeting. You have honed your palate to be able to confidently judge when a batch is ready and can identify 8/9 origins correctly in a blind taste test. You complete each part of the chocolate making process quickly, safely, and to spec for the lead level. You lead by example to promote safely working with machines and ensuring our batches are made to the highest food safety standards. The team knows they can always rely on you to be professional, timely, considerate, and aware of others and your own surroundings. You have great written and verbal communication skills in team and one-on-one settings. Acute listening skills are equally important to understanding problems and finding solutions. We are looking for someone to proactively problem-solve to make our process and team better each day. Responsibilities Chocolate Making: Perform all steps of chocolate production: inspecting beans, roasting, cracking, winnowing, starting batches, tempering, and foiling bars to lead chocolate maker metrics. Have at least one area of the process that you own and are the go-to person for any questions/issues. Taking on production projects such as working with the flavor manager to develop profiles for origins. Leadership & Professionalism: Lead Chocolate Makers must go above and beyond to illustrate that they are: professional, timely, considerate, aware of others and their own surroundings, all while being confident in the process. You are a Lead because you are a role model. Lead the team to meet or exceed all daily goals, troubleshooting any immediate issues and appropriately raising issues to the Production Manager (often with a proposed solution). You can delegate tasks to other team members efficiently, and your teammates want to work with you over and over again because of your positive attitude. Areas of Ownership: Each lead chocolate maker has an area of ownership. These areas are parts of the process that are fundamental to the success of production. Areas of ownership should always be something that leads are not only excited about pursuing but also feel a general drive to exceed expectations in. Each lead will have multiple areas of ownership ranging from tangible parts of the process (ground chocolate production, tempering, and cracking and winnowing) to more fundamental parts of production such as training and quality. Most leads will be able to lead the day and all leads will be capable of being a point person. Production Task Force: PTF is a mandatory meeting for all lead chocolate makers. It is an opportunity for leads and Managers to meet once a week or as necessary to discuss any process questions or difficulties that we are running into. Professional Development: Above all, we want to know that the chocolate we make this year is better than the chocolate we made last year. To realize this, your skills and expertise are constantly evolving as well. Your professional development might include researching a new tool, a “passion project”, collaborating with other departments (i.e. events or education), traveling to conferences, or other professional development opportunities. We encourage our leads to seek out opportunities to grow within their roles and engage within the areas of ownership that they work within. Quality: Tasting and evaluating chocolate bars for flavor and quality. Holding high quality standards, monitoring each batch of beans and every bar that is produced to make sure it holds up to those standards. You have a keen attention to detail while also seeing the big picture. You adhere to quality standards even when it's not convenient. Safety: Adhere to all safety standards and uphold proper machinery, food safety, and quality procedures for yourself and your team members. Guest Engagement: While this role does not require leading tours, we frequently have tour groups coming through to visit the factory, crews filming, and many curious guests around the factory. Be a welcoming presence at the factory while being mindful of safety and daily production goals. Other Tasks as Necessary. You stay curious and ask lots of questions, you are always willing to help and see projects through. Requirements Schedule: 7:30am to 4pm. Weekend availability. Prior Chocolate Experience: Previous experience and a developed chocolate palate as a chocolate maker in a commercial chocolate production environment including roasting, tempering, melanging, and refining artisan chocolate. Leadership Qualities: The ability to absorb and communicate new information in a fast-paced environment and to complete tasks quickly, accurately, and efficiently which includes completing the Lead plan within 30 days. Physical requirements: Ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, and walking throughout the shift and work under pressure, navigate crowded spaces and respond to guest and team needs efficiently and courteously. This position requires that you be moving on your feet for most of the day and to occasionally lift up to 50-pound objects. Benefits Dandelion Chocolate constantly invests in our people and culture. All team members receive medical, vision, and dental benefits as well as the option to enroll in our 401k program. All employees receive paid vacation time, holiday pay, and paid sick time. In addition, our team members enjoy commuter benefits, FSAs, local gym discounts, chocolate tasting opportunities, the chance to travel to origin and our Japan locations, and a range of opportunities to grow and develop within the company. How to Apply Dandelion is growing and we are invested in employees who take ownership over their role and are interested in contributing in a bigger way with us. If you are interested, we'd like to see your resume and a cover letter that shares your favorite chocolate bar youʻve made (or tasted) and why. Keep in mind that we value passion, attitude, and hard work, so tell us what inspires you to want to join our production team.

In the future, if we open in other states or countries, we'll work together to figure out the right structure to manage those areas. In addition, this role is not tasked with designing and building new locations or pop-ups, but will be responsible for their daily operations within their region. This full-time, salary exempt position starts at $115,000 annually. A Day in the Life As the Director of Retail, no two days will be the same, and we are especially excited about candidates who find energy from a role with variety. Your morning may start by meeting with our Product Managers to go over our new product roll-out process before reviewing the end-of-quarter financial reports with the finance and leadership teams. You get a calendar reminder to schedule a holiday planning meeting -- the holidays will be here before you know it! Luckily, your retail holiday playbook will make this year the smoothest season yet. After lunch, you sit down with your retail managers to discuss changes to our training and leveling programs. You would like to implement more concrete hospitality standards into our new hire training program so you solicit their ideas and input. After your meeting, you head over to the Valencia Street Café to interview a potential new Assistant Manager candidate. As the interview wraps up, you get a call from our Operations Team about a new product launch that has gotten pushed up. As you reconfigure the timeline and make a note to notify your managers, you end your day by sending out your weekly status report to the team, ready to do it all over again tomorrow. About You You are an operations-minded planner and people person with a high EQ. You are equally comfortable creating robust reports in a spreadsheet as you are developing merchandising guidelines to help our products look their best on the shelves. Your been-there-done-that experience provides guidance and mentorship to our retail teams, and your unflappable zen keeps your teams focused and motivated even on the busiest and most stressful days. Ideally you have worked in a retail leadership role before and understand the importance of warm hospitality and consistently made drinks. This is not a desk job -- our ideal candidate is operational, hands-on, and someone the team can rely on to get the things done. Responsibilities Lead Retail Operations -- Lead and expand upon our retail operations including hiring, building out scalable training and leveling programs, visual merchandising, inventory management, and instilling world-class hospitality standards. Guest Happiness -- Develop systems and training protocols designed to reinforce and improve our hospitality and retail service standards. Ensure that guests feel welcome and part of the story of craft chocolate and Dandelion's place in the industry, constantly striving to raise the bar for guest service. Financial Monitoring -- Track and hit revenue goals, labor costs, and contribution targets, while maintaining positive reviews and a happy team with appropriate retention rates. Standardize Operations and Procedures -- Create systems and processes to ensure that each café is operating at its best, even when management is not present. Whether a guest walks into our Las Vegas café or our Ferry Building shop, your behind-the-scenes work ensures that they will receive the same level of warm hospitality and the same perfectly made hot chocolate. Develop Training and Leveling Programs -- Use feedback and company input to develop and roll out effective and comprehensive training programs for all new team members. Team Management and Health -- Retention, being available for first-line managers, fostering a sense of high EQ belonging within cafes. Have clear advancement paths and plans for retail staff. Merchandising Optimization -- Create playbooks and guidelines for merchandising that can be adapted for each location's specific needs. Inventory Management & Forecasting -- Help build revenue targets and scenarios, labor forecasts, and capex/opex plans. Visit locations -- This is a hands-on role: regularly visit and check in on assigned locations in order to identify issues early, coach in real time, and foster a strong, consistent retail culture. Optimize existing business & day-to-day operations -- Continually improve and standardize systems to build a strong foundation for continued future expansion. Internal Communication -- Your weekly reports to the leadership team keep everyone updated on current trends, forecasts, and any potential bumps in the road. You meet regularly with each retail manager to stay informed about the inner workings of their teams. Other tasks as necessary Requirements People Management -- You have managed teams before and know how to coach, motivate, and strengthen Managers, Leads, and Associates as retail operators and business owners. Schedule and Availability -- Our stores are open 7 days per week and most holidays, so some nonstandard working hours will be required such as evenings, weekends and holidays. Café and/or Retail Know-how -- You have an excellent understanding of how premium retail outlets and/or cafes operate with 3+ years of experience in a management role. Whether it's a new way to merchandise a product or a more holistic approach to training, you are always looking for ways to raise the bar. Tech Skills -- You have no problem learning new systems, can easily understand sales data in Square, and can create a revenue forecast spreadsheet. You're very familiar with Google Suite and can use VLOOKUP/INDEX/MATCH in your sleep. Financial Acumen -- While you don't have to have a degree in Accounting, you understand the basics and can work seamlessly with our finance team to create revenue forecasts and labor plans that adjust to the seasonal nature of our business. Soft Skills -- Our culture is a positive, can-do, servant-oriented culture that takes active listening to an entirely new level. You can eloquently distill and communicate complex topics broadly to the exec team, individual team members, and everyone in-between. Team members receive medical, vision, and dental benefits as well as the option to enroll in our 401k program, paid vacation time, holiday pay, and paid sick time. • Apprentice Chocolate Maker

    Dandelion Chocolate 3.8company rating

Dandelion Chocolate job in San Francisco, CA

Job Description About Us Dandelion Chocolate is a bean-to-bar chocolate factory in San Francisco's Mission District. We make chocolate from only two ingredients, cocoa beans and cane sugar, and travel to origins as often as we can to build good, trusting relationships with the producers who grow and ferment the beans we buy. We're always on the search for good cocoa beans, and now we're looking for an Apprentice Chocolate Maker to help our production team scale up and craft our single origin chocolate. About You You should love chocolate as much as we do, but you don't have to know everything - we'll teach you everything we know. After adequate shadowing and hands-on training, you will join our production team in their daily routine - roasting, cracking, sorting and winnowing cocoa beans, then tempering and molding chocolate bars. This is a physical job, but it's a labor of love. This is an opportunity to be part of the team working at our large factory on 16th Street where we are scaling up our processes and production, while striving to make some of the world's best chocolate. You must be comfortable working with machinery and willing to go with the flow as processes change and develop and to work independently as well as with our team of chocolate makers. We prefer that candidates have worked in the food and beverage/culinary or manufacturing industry, as it helps with the pace and demands of this position. This full-time role starts at $26.75/hour with an increase after training. We're looking for someone who is eager to learn about chocolate, has a positive outlook, and likes to get their hands dirty. Responsibilities Production: Learning and performing all steps of chocolate making: sorting cocoa beans, roasting, winnowing, refining and conching, tempering, grinding, and foiling, wrapping and labeling bars. Contribute towards our daily goals of sorting 550 kg of cocoa beans, roasting 8-10 roasts a day, tempering 7000 bars, and making sure we hit our target of 13 conches a week. You can walk through the factory with a Senior Chocolate maker and be able to describe our processes and procedures per station and talk about how chocolate is made. R&D and Quality: Tasting and evaluating chocolate bars for flavor and quality. You can tell if the flavor or consistency of a batch is slightly off. You can blindly tell where at least 7 chocolate bars country of origins are. You actively participate in Continuing Chocolate Education classes and stay curious about learning more about chocolate. Sanitation & Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining our production facility, including machines. You assist in projects such as the washing of bar molds, bins, sweeping the floor, and using the bucket washer. You know how to operate all of our chocolate machines safely, and are familiar with all of our machine SOPs and order of procedures. Team: Work with the team to hit our daily production goals. You have a positive attitude even when things don't always go as planned and your team wants to work with you again and again. Adhere to GMP (good manufacturing practices): Follow all safety, hygiene, and production protocols to ensure a clean, allergen-free, and safe manufacturing environment. This includes proper use of PPE, handwashing, handling ingredients safely, and adhering to our dress code (no piercings). Other tasks as necessary. You stay curious and ask lots of questions, you are always willing to help and see projects through. Requirements Availability: Available from 7:30am-4pm, Monday-Friday. This role will likely switch to a Tuesday-Saturday schedule eventually. Positive outlook: Even among shifting priorities or broken machines, you are able to keep a healthy perspective and remain positive. Kitchen know-how: Prior experience working in a commercial kitchen or production facility preferred, especially with a team. Comfortable with repetitive tasks. Physical aptitude: This position requires that you be moving on your feet for most of the day and to occasionally lift objects up to 50-pounds. Must be able to stand, bend, squat, and use hands for tasks requiring both fine and gross motor skills. Guest facing: While this role does not require leading tours, we frequently have tour groups coming through to visit the factory, crews filming, and many curious guests around the factory. Benefits The benefits and perks continue beyond a robust chocolate education. Dandelion Chocolate constantly invests in our people and culture. All team members receive heavily subsidized medical, vision, and dental benefits as well as the option to enroll in our 401k program. All team members receive paid vacation time, holiday pay, and paid sick time. In addition, our team members enjoy commuter benefits, FSAs, chocolate tasting opportunities, and a range of opportunities to grow and develop within the company. How to Apply Dandelion is growing and we are invested in employees who take ownership over their role and are interested in contributing in a bigger way with us. If you are interested, we'd like to see your resume and a cover letter that includes a short description of your favorite food experience or influence. Keep in mind that we value passion, attitude, and hard work, so tell us what inspires you to want to join our production team. Powered by JazzHR WffJZtTGXY
