Darlington School was actually called Rome High School during its first year of existence in 1905.

One of the oldest homes in Floyd County, Darlington's Home-on-the-Hill has served as the residence of all presidents and heads of school since it was purchased in 1923.
When it opened in 1923, it contained dorm rooms, classrooms, an assembly hall, school offices, teachers' quarters, a library, and a dining room, cafeteria and kitchen.
Darlington School enrolled its first 30 boarding students in 1923.
After two large fundraising campaigns and a great deal of support from the Rome community, the school was moved to its current location in 1923.
In April 1973, the Board of Trustees voted for the consolidation of the 68-year-old institution with Thornwood School for Girls.
In 2013, Darlington sold the Thornwood campus to Shorter University and moved the Lower School to the main campus, creating a true community atmosphere.
