What is a data center supervisor and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
3 min read

Even though most companies store their valuable information digitally instead of in filing cabinets, they still need a dedicated space for the servers and other infrastructure to store their data. This place is called a data center, and a data center supervisor works there and makes sure that all data storage equipment is functioning as it should.

The daily duties of a data center supervisor involve working with equipment and people. They test servers and computers to ensure they are working properly, make any necessary updates, and develop procedures to standardize data storage. A data center supervisor usually manages a whole team of data center technicians and steps in if they need any help or if a colleague is having issues accessing data.

It goes without saying that a data center supervisor needs to know a lot about data and computers. That is why many have a bachelor's degree, although it is possible to find work without one and several years of experience working in a data center.
