Data entry technician makes sure that a company always has access to accurate information by entering data and updating databases. Data entry technicians can work in a variety of industries, from healthcare to technology, since many businesses rely on large amounts of accurate data in order to operate. Data entry technicians need to be fast and accurate typists in order to enter customer information. They also need some technical knowledge in order to maintain databases and correct any errors. Besides this general knowledge, data entry technicians usually need industry-specific experience, such as knowledge of Medicare coding or HIPAA guidelines, to manage data according to regulations and verify data when necessary.

Most data entry technicians only have an associate's degree, although a few choose to go on to earn a bachelor's.

Most data entry technicians start off working as cashiers or customer service representatives. Sometimes they need experience relevant to their industry-for example, a data entry technician working in a medical office may start off as a pharmacist technician. Once they are hired, data entry technicians can expect an average salary of $30,294 a year.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being a data entry technician. For example, did you know that they make an average of $14.44 an hour? That's $30,042 a year!

Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow -7% and produce -276,700 job opportunities across the U.S.

What Does a Data Entry Technician Do

There are certain skills that many data entry technicians have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed interpersonal skills, organizational skills and writing skills.

When it comes to the most important skills required to be a data entry technician, we found that a lot of resumes listed 18.4% of data entry technicians included customer service, while 9.6% of resumes included medical records, and 8.3% of resumes included triage. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

Even though some data entry technicians have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.
