Business Unit: Bar Product Metallurgy We oversee product quality throughout the mill. We are problem solvers and are relied on to make multiple decisions on product issues throughout the day. Ongoing Projects The team dispositions material placed on hold for technical and production issues related to order requirements. The team interacts with multiple groups including Customer Service, Production and Quality daily. The team reviews customer specifications for ability to reliably meet customer requirements on orders. The team works closely with R&D on new product development and product characterization work. The team monitors Cost of Poor Quality through test results and material deviations. The ongoing project work is driven through CPQ reduction efforts. Your Role as an Intern You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks: Support Metallurgy though project work based on CPQ issues in bar and wire production. Examples of project work include work with sizing operations on reasons for Undersize issues in bar and work with Bar Straighteners on Out of Straight issues with high temperature / high strength bars. Intern should be willing to spend a majority of their time on the floor with production - and should feel comfortable working with multiple people including Metallurgy group, Production Engineers and operators. You must be: Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in Material Science or equivalent Minimum 3.0 GPA Candidates should possess basic excel skills Willing and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA location. Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter's government contracts. Pay Range Hourly rates are based on: 1 - Program of study; 2 - Degree type (i.e., Bachelor's); 3 - Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00 per hour. Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible) Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date. This senior supervisor position is housed in the Center for Black Digital Research (CBDR), a collaboration between the College of Liberal Arts, the University Libraries, and, imminently, the College of Engineering, working in concert with the directorate of research faculty from these multiple colleges. The Data Scientist will collaborate to apply data analysis, visual analytics, and other computational techniques to research with data science and digital humanities methods that align with the CBDR's principles and practices. The position will report to the Digital Humanities Librarian within the Research Informatics and Publishing Department with day-to-day management by the CBDR interdisciplinary faculty directorate. The Center for Black Digital Research is home to a diverse community of students, staff, faculty, and external partners. The Data Scientist will collaborate with research faculty in the analysis and development of computational methods of datasets, digital collections, and related metadata; propose solutions using theories and techniques to advance CBDR's research agenda; analyze system pipelines, workflows, and software options to establish and ensure effectiveness, scalability, and interoperability of computing and digital publishing infrastructures within the Center's projects and with external partner institutions; provide consultation and expertise of computational applications to a research team ranging from undergraduates to faculty; perform, train, and supervise computerized data processing operations, statistical analysis, and data visualizations in common digital humanities applications; assess and determine feasibility of Center objectives and the related interlocking systems and applications to ensure compatibility, quality, and timeliness that bridges interdisciplinary gaps and streamlines cross-disciplinary project work; and author or co-author papers, proposals, presentations, and report. The Data Scientist will supervise project teams, including student and faculty committee chairs, to ensure quality, efficiency, and sustainability in ways that embrace the Center's commitments to expanding opportunities in what we call transformational technologies at the intersection of AI, machine learning, and the digital humanities. This position will help lead the CBDR's new efforts to research, develop, and present new ideas, concepts, and solutions, such as applying machine learning, large language models, or other innovative technologies to enhance and expand public access to the CBDR's digital collections.
