David's Supermarkets was founded in 1964 by David Waldrip with the opening of a grocery store in Milford, Texas.
In 1988, Davids introduced the IGA brand to Australia.
Shares in the Davids family company were tightly held until 1998, when the South African company Metro Cash & Carry succeeded in buying more than 78 per cent of the company.

The name acknowledges the pivotal role South African owned Metro Cash & Carry plays in the strategic direction of the company, a majority shareholder till 2004.
