JOB SUMMARY
The Pet Care Assistant works with the veterinary medical team to provide and prepare for the best medical care of pets, and to ensure this is provided in a happy, welcoming, friendly and efficient manner, influencing clients to return and refer their friends and families.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
· Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team.
· Prepare the treatment room for examination of pets and all necessary medical item and supplies (e.g. vaccinations, fecal loops, slides, etc.) for the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician. Set up fecals, smears, and skin scrapings as allowed by state rules and regulations.
· Maintain the flow of the Cycle of Service in accordance with position. Provide Client Education regarding preventive care, Optimum Wellness Plans, and basic status of hospitalized pets. Serve as support to the Client Services Coordinator staff on an as-needed basis.
· Hold or restrain pets during examination, treatment, or inoculation.
· Prepare routine in-house laboratory tests (e.g. canine heartworm, feline leukemia, FIV, and canine parvovirus) as allowed by state rules and regulations.
· Monitor the comfort of hospitalized patients. Ensure the comfort of hospitalized patients by "walking", exercising, feeding, and cleaning cages and pet (when approved by the veterinarian or veterinary technician).
· Bathe and dip pets when necessary to treat dermatological conditions (when advised by veterinarian or veterinary technician.
· Clean the surgical suite and instruments.
· Ensure cleanliness of the hospital including but not limited to housekeeping such as laundry, dishes, mopping, cage cleaning, trash collection and removal and instrument cleaning as outlined by hospital protocols
· Other job duties as assigned.

Experience, Education and/or Training
· High School Diploma preferred.
· Must be at least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography (x-ray) and exposure to radioactive substances.
· One year of related experience required with customer service preferred.

What you will do
Work closely with surgeons in providing patient care across the continuum (clinic, inpatient, operating room, emergency/trauma bay) by performing consultation, evaluation, and provisional management of the patient with general surgery needs or traumatic injuries.
Design and evaluate individualized treatment plans, collaborate with the consulting/ancillary services, and coordinate care including admission, transfers, and discharges. Consult with members of the health care team for emergency problems to expedite resolution/disposition.
Participate in hospital rounds, trauma service rounds, review and interpret laboratory/radiologic studies and vital signs. Analyze data to identify health/illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health/illness problems, variations from the norm in diagnosis, emergent problems, and complications. Intervene as appropriate in collaboration with the general surgery and trauma service teams.
Assist with surgical procedures in the operating room and other designated locations. Tasks include assisting in providing exposure by retraction or suctioning, handling tissue, providing hemostasis, suturing, and using instruments to include laparoscopic camera operation.
Provide documentation of services provided in compliance with established medical records, medical staff, and billings procedures. This may include history and physical, consultation, progress notes, discharge summaries, or other necessary documentation.

New graduate APRN incumbents will maintain bedside nursing skills for the first 24 months and may be designated to work at the bedside. Maintenance of skills work and assignment at bedside will be determined by leadership.
Provide early identification of discharge needs, working with case management and social services, nursing care team, and ancillary services for coordination.
Develop proficiency in performing thorough history and physical examinations including neurologic and orthopedic trauma examinations with interpretation of radiologic findings.

Functions independently and collaboratively with the physician and all disciplines to provide continuity of health care services for individuals, families, and/or groups. Evaluates the health status, acute episodes of illness, and health care needs of individuals through emphasis on history, physical exam, and psychosocial assessment in collaboration with other health care teams.
Analyzes data to identify health/illness problems, the human responses to actual or potential health/illness problems, variations from the norm in diagnosis, emergent problems, and complications.
Designs and evaluates individualized treatment plan. Coordinates care for continuity of care across the health care continuum. Consults with other members of the health care team for emergency problems to expedite disposition/resolution. Collaborates with nursing care team and Physician Assistant/APRN groups.
Under the supervision of the Neurosurgeon, writes and effectively communicates orders in accordance with management protocols. Communicates new or altered findings to the Neurosurgeon.
Attends Neurosurgery service rounds, participates in patient evaluation and care planning, reviews laboratory studies, vital signs and x-rays. Intervenes as determined appropriate in collaboration with the Neurosurgery team and within management protocols standards.
Incumbents will maintain bedside nursing skills by providing three flexible bedside nursing shifts per month and may be designated to work at the bedside for further shifts. Maintenance of skills work and assignment at bedside will be determined by leadership.
Assists in the operating room on neurosurgical cases.
Dictates discharge summaries with physician co-signing. Provides early identification of discharge needs and ensures that appropriate referrals are made with case management and social services, nursing care team and attending RN.
Facilitates patient/family participation in health care by identifying learning needs and providing education to enhance decision-making. After discussion of the plan of care with the Neurosurgeon, provides information to patients and their families regarding diagnosis, plan of care, expectations, and prognosis. Provides education to all disciplines involved in Neurosurgery care regarding special needs and/or procedures for Neurosurgery Services patients.
Assists staff in the coordination of a plan of care for the Neurosurgery Services patients.
Facilitates referrals and specialty consults and assists in the coordination of care. Communicates with outreach physicians, hospitals, and EMS.
Refers Neurosurgery Services patients to in-house support services and/or community services as needed.
Evaluates patients in the outpatient clinic setting, monitors problem development and provides appropriate referrals for follow-up and problem resolution. Performs expanded role in the outpatient setting including suture, staple removal, wound care and other therapies in accordance with management protocols.
Provides telephone consultation to patients and/or physicians following discharge when on duty.
Assists in the development of research based clinical care protocols, guidelines, and pathways for Neurosurgery services patients. Facilitates changes in clinical practice based upon document research. Monitors and analyzes outcomes based on research driven practice change. Assists staff nurses in participating in research and incorporating the findings into their practice.
