DC People's Counsel company history timeline

1970

In 1970, a group of progressive Washington, DC attorneys ran a campaign to oppose President Nixon’s nomination of Harold Carswell to the United States Supreme Court.

1971

Encouraged by their success in defeating Judge Carswell’s nomination, these lawyers founded Washington Council of Lawyers in 1971.

1972

One of the first successful events after our founding was the 1972 Counter Law Day Luncheon.

1975

Community concern in 1975 about rapidly rising electric rates resulted in the reestablishment of the Office by Congress through 88 Stat.

2018

Following the DC Council’s passage of the DC Water Consumer Protection Amendment Act of 2018 on December 18, 2018, the Office of the People’s Counsel’s area of advocacy was expanded.

2019

Effective April 11, 2019, OPC was authorized to directly assist DC Water ratepayers with service issues.

2020

Beginning in early 2020, the world experienced a pandemic on an unprecedented scale.
