PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The Interpreting Services Department at The Learning Center for the Deaf provides American Sign Language interpreting in a variety of settings, including educational, medical and therapeutic environments. Our Deaf interpreters have extensive training in utilizing their native knowledge of ASL for assessment and specialized situations. These assignments require nuanced translations that contain cultural, visual, tactile and linguistic elements. We also provide information regarding the Deaf Community, how to work with interpreters, and how to make communication more accessible. Our team of schedulers coordinate, schedule, and support interpreters in an effort to maintain the smooth operation of the entire department.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide interpreting services within The Learning Center for the Deaf and the greater Deaf Community to support our mission.
Be available and flexible for last minute assignments/changes throughout the scheduled work day.
Fulfill additional department duties related to the interpreting profession as assigned, which may include, but are not limited to mentoring interpreting students.
Deaf Interpreters may work with other specialized interpreters, including but not limited to: ASL, Deaf Blind, and Legal Interpreters as needed.
Participate in approved staff development and in-service activities.
Attend in-person and remote department meetings.
Complete assigned translation projects according to department protocol.
Downtime expectations: Prepare for upcoming assignments, participate in mentoring, and attend approved professional development seminars.
Maintain or pursue professional growth and certification through participation in RIDs Certificate Maintenance Program (CMP) or Associate Continuing Education Tracking (ACET).

This position will provide support to Victim Witness Case Managers in preparation for criminal trials. The chief objective of the Victim Witness Program is to reduce the trauma of victimization and encourage crime victims to cooperate with and participate in the criminal justice system by providing direct services and other program support services as outlined in the Virginia Crime Victim and Witness Rights Act. This role provides interpreter services for meetings, court proceedings, as well as administrative duties for the Program including drafting correspondence; maintaining client and program records; data entry; and reception services. Offering sworn testimony in court may be required.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 4 years of related experience.
PREFERENCES:
Preference given to Court Certified Spanish Interpreters. If not currently certified the candidate will go through the certification process through the Supreme Court of Virginia, Office of the Executive Secretary with the goal of certification within 24 months. **Some calls may be highly emotional and/or stressful in nature.
