Deal Golf company history timeline

1901

The club, which celebrated its 125th anniversary last year, played an essential role in the sale of member Andrew Carnegie’s steel interests to J.P. Morgan and others in 1901.

1903

By 1903, there were nearly 600 members including summer visitors; annual dues were $25; visitors paid $1 per day; and the links were open year round.

1910

Players included five-time British Open Champion J. H. Taylor, the talented amateur Walter Travis, and the 1910 United States Open Champion Alex Smith.

1912

By 1912, Young experienced financial problems that forced him to sell his estate to the Hollywood Golf Club.

1941

However his greatest achievement took place in 1941 at Cherry Hills C.C. in Denver, CO where in the finals, he beat Byron Nelson on the 38th hole to win the PGA Championship.

1952

Although there have been many changes in the manufacture of golf clubs, perhaps the single biggest change at the outset was the development of the carbon steel golf shaft by True Temper Sports in 1952.

1957

In 1957 an “ad hoc” committee was formed to devise a modernization plan that would substantially upgrade the clubhouse.

1961

1961: Jack Nicklaus turns pro.

1962

In 1962, he won the United States Open, only the first in an impressive string of victories.

1967

Nicklaus began working on a course in Columbus called Muirfield Village around 1967.

1968

Nicklaus chafed at being handled by Palmer's manager, and in 1968 he left McCormack.

1969

Nicklaus also lost weight in 1969 and let his hair grow, making him more photogenic.

1970

In 1970, the company incorporated as Golden Bear International Inc.

He continued to play incredible golf, winning the British Open in 1970, and then seven more major tournaments over the next five years.

1973

After co-designing with great names in the field, Nicklaus decided to strike out on his own in 1973.

1976

In 1976, Nicklaus hired Charles E. Perry to take over the running of Golden Bear.

1981

By 1981, Nicklaus had made some $3.6 million playing golf over his career so far.

1988

Jack Nicklaus was named Player of the Century in 1988, and is considered to be the greatest golfer in the history of the game.

1993

In 1993, the company entered a joint venture with Club Corp.

1996

Pro golfers who have earned victories at Las Vegas National Golf Club include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods, who played the course in 1996 when he won his first PGA Tour event.

2000

The stockholder class-action suit was settled by mid-2000 with a settlement of $3.5 million.

2003

The marketing change by firms, such as Golf Galaxy (which was purchased by Dick’s Sporting Goods in 2003) allowed those golfers, who weren’t private club members, to purchase apparel as well as golf clubs, which were unavailable to golfers at public golf courses.
