Back in the 1800’s insurance was difficult, if not impossible for farmers to purchase.
Incorporated in February of 1878, with the first policy being written in March of 1878.
Germania Mutual Aid Association was organized in 1896 in Perry, Texas under the leadership of Otto Rau, the first president.
Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Association (GFMIA): Organized in 1896, the GFMIA is a farm mutual insurance company operating under Chapter 911 of the Texas Insurance Code.
In 1957 a supplemental contract became available insuring wind, falling aircraft, smoke and water damage etc.
In 1960, the name changed to Germania Farm Mutual Aid Association to comply with the state’s requirements.
In 1977 windstorm, livestock and machinery floaters and liability coverage became available for the farm properties.
GIC was organized in 1978 and is a “standard” company.
However, it wasn’t until 1982 when the name formally changed to Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Association (GFMIA).
Germania Life Insurance Company (GLIC): Another wholly owned subsidiary, was organized in 1983 to provide life insurance products to members and policyholders.
Founded in 1986, the Germania Credit Union (GCU) offers financial services to employees, policyholders, and community members who live, study, work, or worship within a 10-mile radius of Brenham, TX.
In 2002 the Germania Mutual wrote just under $6 million in premium, with $5 Million in Surplus and services over 7500 member customers.
