Dechert company history timeline

1875

The firm's first predecessor, MacVeagh & Bispham, was formed in 1875 by Wayne MacVeagh and George Tucker Bispham.

1876

As a firm partner, he maintained an ambitious roster of outside activities, heading the commission that led to the resolution of the 1876 Hayes-Tilden presidential election dispute and briefly serving as President James Garfield’s attorney general.

1877

The Pennsylvania Railroad, one of the nation’s largest and most powerful economic enterprises, first retained the firm in 1877 and would remain a client for nearly a century.

1884

In 1884, Bispham became a law professor at his alma mater.

1893

MacVeagh went on to become United States Attorney General under President James Garfield, and then United States Ambassador to Italy in 1893.

1934

Joseph Clark joined the firm in 1934 after practicing law for eight years.

1942

The MacVeagh & Bispham's successor merged with another Philadelphia law firm, Dechert, Smith & Clark, in 1942.

1946

Focused practice groups, including taxation (headed by Dechert himself), business & corporate, fiduciary and litigation, were introduced in 1946.

1951

In 1951, he was elected mayor of Philadelphia—the city’s first Democratic mayor in more than 60 years.

1962

After undergoing several more name changes, the firm became Dechert Price & Rhoads in 1962.

1996

Veteran litigator Leonard Garment became a partner in the Washington, D.C. office in 1996.

2005

Andrew Levander joined Dechert’s New York office in 2005.

2018

In the 2018 AmLaw Global 200 survey, Dechert ranked as the 43rd highest grossing law firm in the world.
