At the age of 30, Dean Kamen sold his first company, AutoSyringe, and in 1982 he founded DEKA to focus on medical innovations aimed to improve lives around the world.
In 1989 he founded FIRST® to build the next generation’s workforce.
In 1989, Kamen established For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), a nonprofit group devoted to inspiring high school students to learn about science and technology.
In 1990, Kamen was troubled by the sight of a man trying to get his wheelchair over the curb of a sidewalk.
A book proposal about the HT--then known only as Ginger or "IT,"--was leaked to the press in January 2001, prompting a whirlwind of media speculation about the nature of the new device.
The consumer version of the HT was scheduled for its commercial debut in late 2002, priced at $3,000.
The IBOT was in clinical trials in 2002. Its manufacturer, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, hoped to begin selling the devices by the summer of 2003 at a projected cost of $25,000 each.
