Del Mar Fairgrounds company history timeline

1880

By holding competitions to see who grew the sweetest citrus, who baked the tastiest pie, and who had the fastest horse, the San Diego County Fair was born in 1880.

1934

After the successful opening of the Santa Anita Park racetrack in Arcadia, California on Christmas Day 1934, William A. Quigley, stockbroker, former college football coach, and resident of La Jolla formed the idea of starting a racetrack on the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

1936

He successfully pitched this to Bing Crosby, and together they founded the Del Mar turf Club on May 6, 1936.

In 1936, the 22nd DAA purchased the property at the mouth of the San Dieguito River, now known as the Del Mar Fairgrounds, to host the annual county fair.

The Works Progress Administration provided the initial funding and the Del Mar Fair opened to great fanfare in 1936, a yearly tradition that continues.

1938

On August 12, 1938, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club hosted a $25,000 winner-take-all match race between Charles S. Howard's Seabiscuit and the Binglin Stable's colt, Ligaroti.

1942

Quigley would remain General Manager of the racetrack until his death at the age of 49 in 1942.

1946

The first Bing Crosby Stakes was held at Del Mar in 1946 and that same year the Santa Fe Railroad began offering a racetrack special bringing spectators, bettors, and horses to Del Mar from Los Angeles.

2000

Beginning in 2000, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's marketing team went through a major shift in their marketing direction.

2013

In March 2013, there was a vote to expand the turf portion of the racetrack.

2014

Starting in 2014, Del Mar began to run more racing cards due to the closure of the Hollywood Park Racetrack.

2017

Del Mar hosted the Breeders' Cup for the first time in November 2017.

2021

Denman did return for the fall meet in November, and resumed calling the Del Mar races in July 2021.
