Delaware River and Bay Authority company history timeline

1962

In 1962, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) was established through a congressionally approved Compact between the states of Delaware and New Jersey.

1964

In 1964, the DRBA initiated a ferry service between Cape May, New Jersey, and Lewes, Delaware, a distance of 17 miles.

1984

A full-time police presence was established at the ferry in April of 1984 when a second police troop was opened in Cape May, New Jersey.

1986

In January 1986, a third troop was opened in Lewes, Delaware.

1995

In March of 1995, the DRBA closed on a parcel of land located in Cape May County, New Jersey, contiguous to the Cape May ferry terminal.

In May 1995, the Authority entered into a 30-year lease agreement with New Castle County (DE) to operate the New Castle Airport.

1996

In November 1996, the department reached a major milestone by receiving the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies’ (CALEA), international accreditation award.

1998

In March 1998, the DRBA initiated its second economic development project, Salem County Business Center located at exit 4 on Interstate 295 in Carneys Point, New Jersey.

1999

The DRBA signed agreements in 1999 to operate three additional airport facilities: the Civil Air Terminal at Dover (Del.) Air Force Base, the Millville (N.J.) Airport and the Cape May (N.J.) Airport.

2000

In the fall of 2000 the DRBA added the Delaware Airpark in Kent County, Del., to its fold.

2002

In 2002, the DRBA commission approved $800,000 for capital investments to attract a local restaurateur who established Harry's Seafood Grill as well as a bustling public market tucked in an historic warehouse.

2009

In January 2009, the Authority Commission unanimously authorized the sale of an 11.7 acre parcel to Verizon Wireless.

2014

In 2014, the Authority Commission unanimously authorized the sale of the Riverfront Market to the Riverfront Development Corporation, which was finalized in December 2014.
