By 1957, nearly 2,000 children were covered by California Dental Association Service, which later developed into Delta Dental of California.
Nearly 7,000 dentists joined the California Dental Service network by 1963.
In 1963, legislation passed in Michigan making it possible to form nonprofit dental service corporations that could underwrite risk.
In 1966, Delta Dental Plans Association was created in order to coordinate dental insurance for companies with employees in multiple states.
Delta Dental of New Jersey, the state’s largest dental coverage provider, first started offering dental programs in 1969.
Delta Dental of New Mexico is a not-for-profit corporation that has been providing dental benefit plans for New Mexico residents since 1971.
In 1991, the company signed its first contract with the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement system.
The Research and Data Institute was established in 2005 to develop new benefit plan designs based on scientific evidence and find new ways to improve business processes and service.
In early 2006, Delta Dental of Michigan, with its affiliated companies in Ohio and Indiana, and Delta Dental of Tennessee, signed an affiliation agreement under a new nonprofit holding company to strengthen their market positions and increase the number of Americans with dental benefits.
The newest affiliate, Delta Dental of Arkansas, joined the enterprise in 2012.
In 2013, the enterprise paid out nearly $3 billion for dental care for 12.1 million enrollees.
In 2016 alone, it paid out $3.6 billion for dental care.
In addition to this grant, the company’s philanthropic arm, Delta Dental Community Care Foundation, provided more than $9.6 million in 2017 funding and support to advance research, education and access to dental care across its 15-state service area, plus the District of Columbia.
