Under general supervision performs a variety of duties to encompass but not limited to the care and management of patients in accordance with the Brown University Health mission vision values with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. Ordering and interpreting diagnostic work-up including X-rays MRIs Cat Scans EMGs blood tests wound cultures referring to other specialties coordination of care and prescribing medications including narcotics. Prepare and dictate outpatient clinic notes. Serve as a resource to referring physicians/staff/patients/families. Provide patient and family education and instruction on pre-operative and post operative care. Perform minor office procedures including suture removal drain removal surgical wound care and other various outpatient procedure as directed by the Neurosurgeon. Triaging patient calls and patient portal questions and contacting the neurosurgeon when appropriate. Provide follow-up care including the appropriate adjustment of medications in accordance with established protocols or in response to specific instructions from supervising physician. Inform and teach patients and families about planned surgical or diagnostic procedures health promotion/disease prevention activities medications and treatments and assist with the development of teaching materials for patients and families. Maintain familiarity with coding documentation. Interacting with our inpatient Advance Practice Providers and Neurosurgery residents and junior attendings for continuity of care. First assisting in the operating room when needed. Provide outpatient cross-coverage to other Neurosurgery specialties in the outpatient group when needed. Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Bachelors Degree in Biology and Graduate of Accredited Physician Assistant Program required. Assists in the performance of dental and radiography procedures, prepares and maintains dental equipment and supplies in accordance with established PCHC protocols and policies. Duties & Responsibilities: * Provide chair-side assistance to dentist and/or dental hygienist in the performance of dental procedures, to include operative, preventive, periodontal, endodontic, prosthetic, and oral surgical procedures. * Prepare, sterilize, organize and set up dental instruments and equipment, ensures that all dental instruments are cleaned, dated, and processed according to established clinic guidelines and standards. * Monitors and maintains dental equipment, such as compressors, evacuator systems, radiographic developing equipment, sterilizers, and light-curing units, in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines. * Polish teeth of patients under 5 years of age, place sealants and apply fluoride (including varnish) without direct supervision by a Dentist. * Apply topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents, place/remove dental dams, place temporary restorations, remove excess cement on coronal surfaces, fabricate athletic mouth guards and occlusal guards without direct supervision by a Dentist. Provides technical assistance during dental procedures and examinations according to established policies and procedures. Supports specialists in Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics or Orthodontics. Periodically performs procedures requiring certification including administering dental prophylaxis, under the supervision of a licensed provider. Acts as a resource for Dental Assistants. Key Responsibilities: * Greets and directs patients, provides routine information on procedures and escorts patients in and out of service area. Calms and soothes anxious/nervous or uncooperative patients throughout the course of their treatment. * Reviews schedule, planned procedures and additional equipment/instrument needs with assigned provider prior the start of the clinical session. * Prepares room and instruments for scheduled treatment. Mixes materials and passes instruments to dental provider as requested. As directed by a licensed provider, instructs patients on proper dental care and follow up. * Takes, develops, mounts and files dental radiographs that meet departmental standards for quality and readability. Understands proper positioning technique and other requirements when taking panoramic and/or cephalometric films. Checks quality of image and reviews with provider before re taking an image, to minimize exposure to radiation. Takes digital photographs as instructed. May scan physical non digital images into electronic dental record. * Charts teeth and conditions in patient's electronic dental record as directed by the licensed provider. * Maintains the cleanliness of patient areas, workrooms, and equipment. Cleans, disinfects, and maintains dental instruments and equipment. Handles sterile instruments and materials according to standard procedures. Ensures operatory is cleaned and disinfected prior to patient treatment. Monitors status of soiled utility room. Enlists other staff or contacts supervisor to perform routine tasks when needed. * Takes dental impressions and produces study models. Prepares models according to established procedure for delivery to outside lab facility. Logs lab case information upon submission and return. * Restocks dental supplies. Identifies and resolves discrepancies in lab cases sent or returned. Orders supplies if indicated. * Acts as a role model and resource for other dental assistants, providing orientation, training and guidance as appropriate. * May act as Lead Dental Assistant in his/her absence. Makes daily assignment of assistants to providers and assists in the smooth operation of the daily clinical sessions.
