Essential Responsibilities:
Instruct the patient in proper technique of orthodontic oral hygiene, e.g. the use of elastics, separators, face bow and removable appliances and proper tooth brushing technique.
Perform the following functions provided the dentist is on the premises and checks the patient before and after the functions are performed: Remove cement from bands using an ultrasonic or hand scaler. Re-cement loose orthodontic bands Take impressions for the following purposes: Diagnostic models; Counter and opposing models; Fabrication of temporary removable orthodontic appliances; Intraoral bite registration for study model articulation. Remove any portion of an orthodontic appliance causing a patient discomfort and replace isomeric ligatures in an emergency when the dentist is not on the premises. Evaluate each returning patient for loose or broken bands and/or unbonded brackets.
Place and remove ligature ties for adjustment of arch wires and/or bands. Place and remove arch wires. Preliminarily select and size bands. Place and remove interarch elastics and/or spring orthodontic separators. Place bracket on study model and fabricate tray for indirect bonding procedures.
Photograph patient for intraoral and extraoral diagnosis utilizing appropriate retraction technique and equipment. Label and record all models, photographs and x-rays for presentation of case and later retention. Properly finish study models consistent with the criteria established by the orthodontist.
As instructed, trace cephalometric x-rays for diagnostic purposes consistent with criteria established by the orthodontist.

Performs all of the duties permitted a dental assistant consistent with the individuals training and in the presence of or under the observation of a licensed provider as referenced in State Dental Practice Act and the related Administrative Rules. These duties to include: Apply topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents, as directed by the provider. Removal of sutures and post-extraction and periodontal dressings. Retract a patients cheek, tongue, or other tissue during an operation. Assist in the placement or removal of a rubber dam. Remove debris created during operative procedures with a vacuum device, compressed air, mouth washes, or water. Extra-oral procedures which are not hazardous, Inspect the oral cavity using a mirror. Dry root canals with paper points. Place temporary filling material into the endodontic access. Take impressions for periodontal night guard. Polish the coronal surfaces of teeth when a dentist or hygienist has determined teeth are free of calculus. Train persons (patients) in techniques of oral hygiene and prevention of oral disease. In support of the practice of a dentist provider who is not an orthodontist; Preliminary select and size bands. Remove fixed orthodontic appliances. Check for loose bands and brackets. Remove ligature ties and head appliances. Place and remove arch wires, elastics and orthodontic separators. Take intra-oral measurements for orthodontic procedures. Remove supra-gingival orthodontic bracket bonding material with a hand piece that does not exceed 25,000 revolutions per minute. Place ligature ties and head appliances. Greet, introduce self to, and inform patient of general treatment to be provided and provider to be seen consistent with established Kaiser Permanente Behavioral Guidelines. Respond to medical emergency situations consistent with established guidelines. Expose and process dental radiographs as required consistent with established guidelines and radiology equipment use specifications. Take patients blood pressure and accurately record in patients dental record. Clean and sterile and process instruments consistent with established guidelines. Maintain clean, orderly, well organized and supplied work environment, including assigned operatory, laboratory and instrument processing areas, consistent with established infection control. Assure proper handling of all materials in accordance with hazard communication program and infection control guidelines. Assure proper functioning of equipment through the periodic completion of established preventive maintenance procedures such as cleaning and oiling, and reporting non-functioning, damaged, etc. equipment to office manager or supervisor in a timely manner.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
The duties will be performed in accordance with policy and procedure, the standard of care, and in accordance with state certification. The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Perform and assist patients within the Medical Assistant / X-ray tech scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed provider
Daily performance includes full triage, vitals, EKGs, injections, phlebotomy, procedure assistance, occupational physical exams, POC testing, etc..
Perform radiographic exams by prepping patients, explaining the procedure, and practicing safety standards to ensure radiation protection and safe operation of the X-ray machine
Ensure up-to-date EMR patient records, and provide instructions as directed by the provider
Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required
Maintain clear documentation of all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)

RESPONSIBILITIES
Hospital Corpsmen (HM) assist health care professionals in providing medical care to Navy personnel and their families. They may function as clinical or specialty technicians, medical administrative personnel and healthcare providers at medical treatment facilities. Specifically, Hospital Corpsmen may be called upon to:
Perform emergency medical treatment on SEALs, Seabees, Marines and other military personnel injured in the field, as well as on Sailors aboard ships or aircraft
Perform emergency dental treatment as well as construct dental crowns and bridges, process
dental X-rays and operate X-ray equipment
Serve as an operating room technician for general and specialized surgery
Help administer a wide range of preventive care and medications, including immunizations and intravenous fluids
Conduct physical examinations and assisting in the treatment of diseases and injuries
Maintain patient treatment records, conduct research and perform clinical tests
Assist Navy Physicians and Nurses in a variety of medical fields, including, but not limited to: radiology, physical therapy, phlebotomy, dental, surgery, family medicine, pathology, womens health and more

WORK ENVIRONMENT
As a Hospital Corpsman, you have the most diverse range of work environments available in the Navy. Your job will likely take you all over the worldand far out of your comfort zone. As a Hospital Corpsman, you could be assigned to a Navy medical treatment facility, like an on-base hospital or clinic. You could also work on an aircraft carrier in the middle of the ocean or a submarine in the depths of the sea.
PART-TIME OPPORTUNITIES
Serving part-time as a Navy Reserve Sailor, your duties will be carried out during your scheduled drilling and training periods. During monthly drilling, Hospital Corpsmen in the Navy Reserve typically work at a location close to their homes.
