Responsibilities
* Assists dentist(s) chairside in all phases of dentistry.
* Manages patient behavior during treatment.
* Performs all Dental Assistant duties permitted in the State of CaliforniaDental Practice Act, including:
* Operates dental radiographic equipment for the purpose of oral radiology; takes diagnostic quality x-rays, developing and mounting correctly as requested by the dentist(s) as often as needed.
* Performs non-scaling prophylaxis and coronal polishing.
* Applies topical fluoride varnish and/or gel.
* Provides patients with oral hygiene and post-operative instructions following dental procedures.
* Places pit and fissure sealants on permanent dentition.
* Documents treatment and patient information in dental software programs.
* Performs duties using mobile dental equipment.
* Adheres to all OSHA and regulatory sterilization, infection control, and protective barrier guidelines.
* Adheres to all HIPAA regulations in handling patient information.
* Works at non-home clinics as assigned.
* Performs other duties when assigned by the Dental Supervisor/Manager, Associate Clinical Dental Director, and Chief Dental Officer.

Job Requirements
* High school diploma or GED.
* Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association-approved organization.
* Completion of a Dental Board-certified Dental Assisting training program, with the following current and valid certifications for the State of California: Radiation Safety, Infection Control, Dental Practice Act, and Coronal Polishing.
* Ability to fulfill all Dental Assistant duties permitted by the State of CaliforniaDental Practice Act.
* Knowledge of all dental materials and equipment and ability to assist dentist(s) in their proper use.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel and Outlook.
* Ability to handwrite legibly on internal and external documentation.
* Access to reliable transportation with current auto insurance.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Will consider a Dental Assistant, with certification, working toward their RDA License.

Current X-Ray license required.
Experience in EPIC Electronic Health Records.
Current CPR Certification required.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Dental Assistant (DA) is a key member of the Native American Health Center's four-handed dental process, and will increase dentists' efficiency by providing needed support. The primary responsibility of the DA is to assist dentists at chair-side, and to support departmental staff. The DA must be professional, objective, and have superior customer service standards. The DA will be travelling to all locations as scheduled for fill in coverage.
A lab coat will be provided by the Dental Department. The DA must wear personal protective equipment such as protective eyewear, masks and gloves and follow specific company and OSHA procedures when handling hazardous materials. Long hair must be tied back away from the face and no jewelry may be worn (i.e., earrings, rings.). Cleanliness above all is essential. Punctuality and professional demeanor at all times is required.
The Native American Health Center is an accredited institution and adheres to the standards of excellence set forth by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform all duties with excellence and in accordance with the Dental Practice Act of California.
Provide support to dentists. This includes following all instructions from the assigned dentist at chair-side.
Greet all patients in a courteous, professional, and timely manner.
Ability to work in the General and Pediatric Dental Clinics.
Explain plaque control to all patients in a manner that ensures their understanding.
In collaboration with the dentists, provide oral hygiene instructions to patients and parents/caregivers.
Apply topical anesthetic as requested by the assigned dentist.
Check patients; vital signs (i.e., blood pressure, temperature, etc.) as necessary and/or requested by the assigned dentist.
Prepare operatory for patient reception, according to departmental policy. Ensure operatory is as aseptic as possible for patient welfare.
Ensure pre-set trays are well maintained, and always ready to be used for procedures.
Proactively review chart notes for the planned treatment, in order to set up trays and operatory appropriately.
Ensure all materials and instruments needed for providing treatment are ready and available for use.
Prepare anesthesia for transfer to the assigned dentist.
Retract oral tissues in order to increase visual access into the oral cavity.
Remove excess moisture from the mouth by using hi-vac systems and/or air.
Properly transfer instruments to dentists while maintaining extremely high attention to detail and adhering to sterilization standards.
Prepare and properly deliver any required restorative materials to dentists. Obtain Informed Consent prior to dental treatment, and deliver post-operative instructions with guidance from assigned dentist.
Assist clinical staff in optimizing patient flow. This will include restocking items, seating patients, ‘floating', and supporting other dental team members with patient care.
Keep work area well organized, stocked, and clean at all times.
Keep uninvolved people out of the operatories at all times.
Take impressions for diagnostic and opposing study models.
Pour impressions with proper stone, package them for transport to dental laboratory, and forward to the receptionist.
Operate digital dental radiographic equipment for the purpose of oral radiography.
Proactively inform the Dental Lead RDA of any supplies that need to be replenished, so a consistent level of supplies is maintained at all times.
Assist the assigned dentist with referrals, prescription phone-ins, and other processes involved in providing high quality dental care.
DA, as deemed necessary and requested by Lead RDA or supervisors, will perform Sterilization duties in both the Dental and Pediatric Dental Clinics by performing sterilization and maintenance procedure according to departmental policy.
Patient Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe patient practices.
Employee Safety: Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required.
Must have DA Certification and prior experience working as a Dental Assistant is required, preferably with a minimum of 2 years.
Must possess a radiological safety license.
Must have current CPR certification, proof of current TB test Hepatitis Vaccine, and have had a recent physical exam.
Must be computer literate and have experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Experience with NextGen, Dentrix and other database programs are preferred.
Knowledge of the Bay Area Native American community with a commitment to serving Native Americans and other vulnerable patient populations is required.
Willingness to be trained and have the ability to retain information of the assigned duties and responsibilities.
Must have strong organizational skills and technical acumen to carry out above assigned duties. Must have high attention to detail and be able to multi-task.
Must have superior customer service skills, and be able to communicate effectively - verbally and in writing - with varying audiences.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Dental Assistant - Surgical. The Prosthodontist Dental Assistant works under a dentist's supervision to prepare equipment that will be used in dentistry procedures, to ready patients for these procedures, and to help the dentist during these procedures by passing instruments, holding the suction catheter in place, and generally anticipating the dentist's needs. Some Other responsibilities may include sophisticated functions such as removing sutures, processing x-rays and taking the oral impressions that are used to fit crowns.
Responsibilities:
Work under the direct supervision of the Prosthodontist
Perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties, including but not limited to providing chair-side assistance while dentists examine and treat patients.
Ensure patients are as comfortable as possible in the dental chair, prepare them for treatment, and obtain their dental records.
Hand instruments and materials to dentists and keep patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices.
Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, prepare trays of instruments for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care.
Prepare materials for impressions and restorations, take dental x rays, and process x-ray film as directed by a dentist.
Handle other radiological equipment and assist patients with these procedures as directed by a dentist
Perform office duties as needed including: scheduling and confirming appointments, receiving patients, keeping treatment records, sending bills, receiving payments, and ordering dental supplies and materials.
Assist in specialty areas such as oral surgery, periodontics (treatment of gum disease) and prosthodontics (replacement of missing teeth) including dental implantology
Support and assist the hygienist as needed, including but not limited to cleaning trays, room setups and cleanups.
Help track the inventory of the prosthetic supplies and keep the storage closet organized.
Support the radiographic needs of the Patient Education Consultants, Oral Surgeon, & Hygienists.
Working Conditions:
Dental assistants work in a well-lighted, clean environment.
Work area is usually near the dental chair to allow for arranging instruments, materials, and medication and handing them to the dentist when needed.
Dental assistants must wear gloves, masks, eyewear, and protective clothing to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.
Follow safety procedures to minimize the risks associated with the use of x-ray machines.
Experience:
Certified as a Dental Assistant by the A.D.A.
Two years of Dental Assistant experience
Dental implant experience, desired
Must be reliable, work well with others in a fast paced environment, and have good manual dexterity.
Must have current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Physical Requirements:
Regularly required to work in an office environment at both his/her own and others' desks/offices
Required daily to walk the floor, sometimes for extended periods and be able to help wherever needed
Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Able to stand for extended periods of time
Able to keep hand and arm steady while moving arm or while holding arm and hand in one position
Able to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate or assemble very small objects
Able to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions
Able to bend, stretch, twist and/or reach with your body, arms and/or legs
Must possess good multi-limb coordination - i.e. the ability to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting or standing
Must possess good trunk strength - i.e. the ability to use abdominal or lower back muscles to support part of the body continuously or repeatedly over time without “giving out” or fatiguing
Able to shift back and forth between two or more activities or sources of information
Good manual dexterity required to enable safe, skillful use of instruments while working in the mouth

POSITION SUMMARY
The Dental Assisting Training Program is eight (8) months in duration. The Dental Assistant Trainee will receive on-the-job training in addition to completing coursework in Dental Terminology, Infection Control, and Radiology.
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Staff Development, the Dental Assistant Trainee is a dental assistant who is being trained on the job to develop the skills needed to provide chairside assistance to dentists and dental hygienists with all treatments. The Dental Assistant Trainee is responsible for learning the skills in preparing operatories and processing instruments for patient treatment, taking accurate dental radiographs, assuring that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately documented in the electronic dental record, sanitizing operatories, and participating in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site as required. Additionally, this position assists with inventory, sterilization, and other duties as assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To be performed in accordance with RFHN Policies and Procedures
* Successfully completes coursework in Dental Terminology, Infection Control, and Radiology.
* Successfully completes Sterilization and Dental Assisting skills checklist.
* Successfully learns to use the Electronic Dental Record (EDR).
* Learns to support RFHN dentists by assisting with instruments, seating patients, room preparation, and instrument cleaning.
* Learns to greet patients upon arrival and to escort them from waiting room to treatment room.
* Learns to take patient vitals and documents in the Electronic Dental Record (EDR).
* Learns concepts of infection control and Cal OSHA as it relates to the practice of dentistry.
* Learns to take dental intra-oral radiographs and successfully takes and passes the Radiology course and exam.
* Learns to gather patient's medical history for dentist review and final documentation.
* Learns to document patient's current medicines, medical conditions, and pre-medication if needed.
* Learns to document patient's blood pressure, weight, and smoking status.
* Learns to provide chair side assistance during procedures as directed by attending dentist.
* Learns to perform lab tasks, including denture and temporary crown preparation.
* Learns to track and ensure lab cases for the next day have arrived from the lab.
* Learns to set up, break down, and wipe down treatment room between patients.
* Learns to clean, check, sterilize dental instruments, flush water lines, and maintain autoclaves.
* Learns to help with tracking and ordering supplies.
* Learns how to assist with various clinical and administrative functions as appropriate.
* Learns how to ensure the proper disposal of all materials in accordance with Dental Department directive, center policy, as well as state and federal regulation(s).
* Follows all safety protocols set forth by Ravenswood and OSHA.
* Flexible to assist at other sites as requested.
* Complies with all OSHA requirements, Dental Board, infection control practices, and RFHN policies.
