**Duties & Responsibilities**
+ Assist dentists and dental students during examinations and procedures by providing instruments, equipment, chairside support, and real-time documentation of findings and treatment.
+ Prepare, sterilize, disinfect, log, and maintain dental instruments, equipment, and treatment areas in accordance with infection control and safety standards.
+ Set up dental operatories and instrument trays; prepare and handle dental materials, impressions, and model pour-ups.

The Dental Assistant (DA) assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients by performance of routine and delegated duties per standards and policies. The DA scrubs for surgical procedures; cleans instruments and rooms; monitors inventory and stocks OR rooms. Works closely with the dentists in the provision of excellent patient care.
Essential Functions
* Assist and anticipate needs of the dentist and anesthesia provider as it relates to instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies per technique, procedure and special requirements.
* Prepare for dental surgical cases by: Picking supplies and equipment for the procedure; Ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are available; Maintaining inventory and stock room.
* Familiar with procedures performed.
* Know and understand dentist preferences.
* Provide care based on the age-related needs of the pediatric and adolescent patient, with consideration of their developmental/psychosocial needs, environmental safety, educational needs, communication style, and level of understanding.
* Assist with patient transfer from bed to gurney.
* Decontaminates and maintains all equipment, instruments, supplies and cleans surgical rooms between cases and at the end of the schedule as directed by procedure and the RN assigned to the room.
* Follows the surgery center's manufacturer's, and CDC guidelines for decontamination and sterilization.
* Takes x-rays.
* Clean and check x-ray equipment.
* Mixes cement and other materials as required.
* Handles suction hand-pieces and air/water syringes.
* Assures delivery of all specimens to the RN Circulator in the room.
* Stocks and cleans rooms between cases and at the end of schedule.
* Assists with turnover of the OR.
* Assists as directed in the delivery of emergency care.
* Front Desk duties will be part of this position as well as a Patient Service Coordinator.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Assist Dental Director, Dentists and Hygienists in the care and treatment of SIHF Healthcare patients in addition to performing duties of reception, chair side assisting, inventory and records.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist the dentists and hygienists in chair side procedures routinely done in a general dental practice.
2. Responsible for preparation and setting up instruments, materials, and equipment necessary for each procedure.
3. Responsible for the sterilization of instruments, and the cleaning and routine maintenance of equipment and work areas.
4. Schedule patients, handle routine reception work, accurately record information on patient records.
5. Help implement the processing of encounters and billing and bookkeeping procedures.
6. Help to identify related medical and/or social problems, and complete insurance forms.
7. Order supplies and materials.
8. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials as well as maintain thorough and accurate documentation inventory.
9. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
1. Ability and willingness to learn.
2. Ability to establish and maintain effective communications with patients and coworkers.
3. Ability to communicate in English and Spanish desirable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Must be a graduate of an accredited school for Dental Assistants. Previous dental assistant experience preferred, but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of an administrative nature. Local travel by personal automobile is required along with a valid driver's license and insured automobile, if necessary.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Normal work hours for this position are Monday through Friday dayshift. Attendance at off site meetings will be required with no overnight stay. Occasional out-of-town travel may be required.
