The primary role of the Registered Dental Assistant Extended Function (RDA-EF) is to assist the dentist in gaining the patient's commitment to the best possible treatment, with urgency. Key duties associated with assisting the dentist in starting treatment include: utilizing x-ray time to promote the good qualities of the dentist, learning the patient's expectations while educating them with intra-oral pictures, using effective and anticipatory chair-side skills, and effectively supporting the dentist's diagnosis after the examination when the patient asks questions. The RDA-EF should abide by procedures needed for compliance with state and federal safety regulation, infection control, and permitted duties.
Responsibilities • Perform functions in accordance with the applicable state's Dental Auxiliaries Table of Permitted Duties.• Actively participate in attempting to achieve the Perfect Patient Experience by striving to keep your patients focused on the best possible treatment with urgency.• Attend to the patient's individual concerns and expectations.• Maintain a clean, sterile, and cheerful environment where your patients feel comfortable; prepare patients for treatment, and assist the doctors - thereby enabling them to provide efficient, quality dental treatment.• At the direction of the dentist, obtain dental history and/or records from patient (review patient health history and careslips), instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care, record patient charting and all doctor notes on treatment record.• Prepare tray setups for dental procedures, present instruments and materials to dentists and keep patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices and sterilize and disinfect instruments, equipment, and operatories in accordance with the American Dental Association guidelines.• Escort patients to/from the front desk and introduce them to the Continuing Care Clerk.• Maintain adequate supply levels in each operatory, replenishing as needed, an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor in accordance with Company policy and strict compliance with State, Federal, and other regulations, (e.g., OSHA, WC, Dental Board, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, DOL, HR policies and practices).Qualifications• High school diploma or general education degree (GED), and specified training courses as mandated by state for certification, licensure, or registration• Associate degree or one-year certificate from an accredited college or technical school, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, and smell. This position is for a float, and will be required to assist at any of our clinics within Brevard county. Mileage is reimbursed.
POSITION SUMMARY
To provide superior quality, competitive value, and outstanding service by working interdependently with the Dentist and Hygienist to provide dental health care to patients of all ages. The Dental Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties to assist the dental staff in the examination and treatment of patients.
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Graduate from a Florida Board of Dentistry-approved or Graduate from a Florida CODA-accredited dental assisting program or a minimum of three years' experience in Pediatric, General and Oral Dentistry in lei of education.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Florida Radiation Safety coursework and X-Ray Certification to meet Florida Radiography Requirements
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
• Ability to work well in a team environment, remains motivated, is self-directed, and demonstrates initiative
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Completes patient chart within established standards. Verifies chart for completeness. Enters all applicable data into the electronic medical record system (EMR)/electronic Dental record system
• Seats patient courteously, records vitals, triages as necessary and prepares patient for provider
• Maintains daily patient flow to ensure patients will be seen as soon as possible using all available resources. Enters patient information and treatment into the electronic medical record system (EMR)/electronic Dental record system
• Takes necessary diagnostic radiographs as indicated by treatment plan or provider
• Assists with additional dental services, including but not limited to pediatric care, oral surgery, and general restorative procedures
• Ensures all in-office preformed testing is recorded in appropriate logbooks
• Disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards
• Prepares patient, sterilize, or disinfect instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials for patient visit
• Develop favorable relationships with all patients. Instruct patients and their family members on general oral health care and/or information related to post-treatment care as appropriate
• Maintains necessary stock of supplies utilized by dental clinic
• Maintains Eye Wash equipment log on a weekly basis
• Disposes of biohazard waste according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards
• Weekly maintenance on dental units
• Maintains supplies, equipment, and sterilization of hygiene instruments; maintains sterilization protocols and procedures and uses OSHA compliant techniques in sterilization and operatory preparation
• Assists with discharging patients at the end of the visit
• Establish favorable working relationships with all staff members associated with clinic operations including front office personnel, dental hygienists, dentists, and related staff
• Ensures appropriate scheduling of patients and follow up
• Completes additional projects as delegated by providers
• Takes ownership and represents Brevard Health Alliance's mission and organizational goals established by the executive committee. These include, but are not limited to: Productivity, Quality, Patient Satisfaction, and Employee Retention. It is the duty of each BHA employee to incorporate these goals into all daily work routines and strive to achieve and surpass all goals by working as a team. Ensure patients are properly checked-out after every laboratory visit and depart with required paperwork
Perform blood draws into appropriate containers and label them according to protocol
Expected to have knowledge of standard (universal) precautions
Prepare patient specimen(s) for testing by use of centrifugation and enter information into computer system for proper packaging and pick-up
Adhere to all laboratory protocols for quality control and maintenance
Expected to complete 48-hour chart check to ensure lab orders are in the system ready for patient appointment
If a licensed physician is not an-site, a medical assistant/phlebatomist is prohibited from performing the following:
Nursing activities that include the use of the nursing process and require the special knowledge, nursing judgment or skills of a registered or practical nurse, including:
The initial nursing assessment or any subsequent assessments
Prohibited from completing Review of Systems in the EMR
Prohibited from performing injections (medication and/or vaccines)
Prohibited from administering medication(s)
Prohibited from performing aseptic procedures including wound care, dressing changes, etc.
The determination of the nursing diagnosis or interpretations of nursing assessments
Establishment of the nursing care goals and development of the plan of care
Evaluation of progress in relationship to the plan of care
Those activities for which the unlicensed assistive personnel has not demonstrated competence
Additional Position Expectations and Responsibilities
Act as first level contact for the providers and support staff in trouble shooting issues
