The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health Children's Dental Clinic(VBDPH) is currently seeking a hardworking, dependable, organized, caring and experienced individual that enjoys working with children to be a part of our team as a full-time dental assistant to work at our dental clinic. We service Children who reside in the City of Virginia Beach and meet the eligibility criteria. Locations include Virginia Beach Health Department and the Dental Trailer at Birdneck Elementary School.
Our Dental team consists of a dentist, an office manager and one part-time dental assistant.
Under the direction of the dentist, the dental assistant will assist in four-handed dentistry, to include pediatric restorative and preventive procedures, provide patient education, chart existing oral conditions, expose and process intraoral/extraoral digital x-rays, clean and disinfect dental instruments and operatories and maintain dental equipment. Other responsibilities will include maintaining patient charts, filing, scheduling appointments, answering phones data entry and conducting financial interviews to determine patient eligibility.
This position follows OSHA guidelines, disinfects operatory, disinfects & disposes of infectious waste, monitors autoclave function.
Dental Assistant Duties:
Performs dental assistant duties within assigned parameters
Assists in four-handed dentistry
Performs dental assistant duties accurately and with skill applies topical anesthetics, medicinal agents, fluorides, and sealants
Exposes and processes intraoral and extraoral digital x-rays
Educates patients/parents by giving oral hygiene, plaque control and postoperative instructions
Charts patients' conditions at the instructions of the dentist
Ensures patient is prepped properly and protective coverings are applied
Gathers patient history and updates accurately
Administrative Duties:
Obtains documentation to determine eligibility
Schedules appointments, files dental records, completes forms and maintains records

Basic Requirement for Dental Assistant:
Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing chair side assistance supporting a dental specialist by performing intra-oral procedures, maintaining patient related records or charts, and operating dental x-ray equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). (Experience must be supported by your resume).

Assist orthodontists with bonding, wire changes, bracket repairs, debonds, and other chairside procedures.
Manage Invisalign cases from start to finish - including attachment placement, removal, refinement scans, and compliance tracking.
Perform iTero digital scans for new patient records, ClinCheck submissions, and progress checks.
Educate patients and parents on appliance care, aligner wear schedules, and oral hygiene.
Maintain accurate records and ensure smooth patient flow between operatories.
Prepare, sterilize, and stock instruments and supplies, including Invisalign deliveries.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
State-required dental assisting certifications (CDA, RDA) preferred.
X-ray and CPR/BLS certification.
Minimum 1 year of dental assisting experience - orthodontics and Invisalign strongly preferred.
Skills & Attributes
Proficiency in orthodontic procedures and Invisalign protocols.
Skilled with iTero or equivalent digital scanning systems.
Excellent communication and patient education skills.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and a team player.
Commitment to OSHA, HIPAA, and infection control compliance.

Expanded function orthodontic assisting certification.
