Responsibilities
Duties
Perform inter-oral procedures such as take preliminary impressions for study models, remove sutures, and place and remove rubber dams, perio-packs and matrix bands and wedges.
Instruct patient in proper dental techniques, care of appliances, and causes of dental decay.
Operate dental X-ray equipment to take intra and extra-oral radiographs.
Obtain and record related medical history of patient and route patient for medical tests and services.
Maintain dental equipment in a clean and operative condition as well as store and maintain adequate levels of supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. This Position can be filled at the GS-03, GS 04 or GS-05 level with grade level with career ladder promotion to the GS-05 grade level.

Basic Requirement for GS-0681-03/04/05 Dental Assistant:
Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. The following meet these requirements:
(1) Persons who meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Successful completion of an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education; AND are certified as a radiographer in their field.
(2) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others.
(3) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b)practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
For the GS-03:

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then, divide your semester hours of education by 30. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-04:
General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the work required as a Dental Assistant AND six months of specialized experience which includes performing chair side assistance supporting a Dentist; performing intra-oral procedures; taking preliminary impressions; operating dental x-ray equipment; or preparing surgical trays.. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

Education: Successful completion of a two-year dental assistant program or completion of a two-year dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that included at least 12 semester hours of courses in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-05:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing chair side assistance supporting a dental specialist by performing intra-oral procedures, charting, or taking preliminary impressions and operating dental x-ray equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours of courses in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. POSITION SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, the Registered Dental Assistant is tasked with assisting dental providers with all treatments. This position serves as the dentist's or dental hygienist's chair-side assistant and is responsible for preparing operatories and instruments for patient treatment, taking accurate dental radiographs, assures that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately documented in the electronic dental record, sanitizes operatories and participates in appropriate health promotion/disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site as required, assists with inventory, sterilization, and other duties as assigned. The Registered Dental Assistant is able to perform independent dental procedures as delegated and directed by the dentist in accordance with state regulations and laws and Dental Department protocols.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To be performed in accordance with RFHN Policies and Procedures
Assists patients in completing forms, answering their questions and giving directions to patients as authorized by the dentist or hygienist.
Serves as the dental provider's chair-side assistant.
Prepares operatories for patient treatment as per the dental provider's directions.
Sets up, takes and confirms that dental radiographs are accurate as ordered.
Places sealants and varnishes as ordered and directed.
Follows OSHA infection control guidelines and RFD infection control policies and procedures.
Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by the dentist.
Maintains dental equipment and areas in accordance with manufacturer's directions and Dental Department policy and protocol.
Maintains adequate operatory supplies and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes.
Assists dental providers in assuring that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed and filed.
Assists with various clinical and administrative functions as appropriate.
Ensures the proper disposal of all materials in accordance with Dental Department directive, center policy, as well as state and federal regulation(s).
Other duties as assigned and requested.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or GED required.
California RDA license required.
California Sealant Certification highly desirable
Certificate of completion from an accredited course in dental assisting and minimum one year of experience as a Dental Assistant outside of externship - OR - 18 months full-time verified Dentist-supervised dental assisting prior to receiving RDA license.
California Radiation Safety Certificate.
Current BLS (CPR) Certification.
Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency preferred.
Computer literate in a Windows environment; familiarity using Dentrix a plus.
Exceptional customer service skills.
Up to date with COVID-19 vaccines per current CDC guidelines strongly recommended.
The pay range for this position is $25.00 to $38.00 per hour. However, the final base pay will be determined upon a number of individualized factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, education and certification levels, and departmental budget.
