Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm
Pay: $40.00 an hour
Responsibilities of the DentalHygienist:
Ensures patients feel as comfortable as possible before their examination
Conducts initial mouth screenings and check oral health history
Identifies conditions like gingivitis or periodontitis. Cleans and helps protect clients' teeth (e.g. remove plaque or apply fluoride)
Educates clients on proper tooth care (by demonstrating, for example, good brushing techniques)
Gives instructions to clients after dental procedures
Take X-rays or dental impressions
Assists Dentists with selecting appropriate treatments for various diseases
Maintains documentation and charts on each client
Monitors supply and coordinates re-ordering as needed
Qualifications of the DentalHygienist:
Graduate of a recognized dental hygiene school
DentalHygienist licensure preferred
Strong understanding of HIPAA regulations and all dentistry safety guidelines

Reviews patients' medical histories and consult with dentist and/or physician about any special care needs.

Polishes teeth including existing restorations. Applies topical and therapeutic agents and applies sealants. Assesses need for and obtains radiographs. Acts as co therapist with the Dentist in providing and reviewing diagnostic aids, study models, radiographs and charting of hard and soft tissues. Obtains alginate impressions for the fabrication of custom fluoride trays and study models. Removes sutures. Places and removes temporary restorations and periodontal dressings. Exposes and processes radiographs. Administers fluoride therapy. Collects saliva samples and measures salivary flow rates.
4. Acts as co therapist with the General Practice Residents and private dentists in periodontal treatment planning and establishes a preventive maintenance program.
5. Participates in the yearly hygiene orientation to new dental Residents and acts as a resource person to the General Practice Residents in regard to preventive oral health care. Orients and provides clinical teaching of dental hygiene students. Provides dental hygiene classes to Outpatient groups. Provides dental hygiene instruction for in-house patients and the Nursing staff.
6. Arranges for dental representatives to provide in service presentations to the Department of Clinical Dentistry. Participates on various departmental committees. Participates in monthly meetings. Manages and coordinates programs involving special care patients.
7. Communicates findings in writing to the Department of Radiation Oncology and the patient's private dentist for Xerostomia Program. Provides patient education and management of oral side effects of radiation therapy. Provides patient with written information and recommendations for oral health care during radiation therapy. Relates all clinical findings and reports oral side effects to the Program Director for evaluation and recommendation.
Acts as primary liaison between Department of Clinical Dentistry and Department of Radiation Oncology. Orients Radiation Oncology staff.
8. Maintains ongoing communication with the Bone Marrow Transplant Center and coordinates follow-up care for post-transplant patients.
9. Completes clinic record review forms and audits such as operating room sterility audit and Faculty Practice chart review. Completes patient encounter forms for billing of services rendered, requisitions for laboratory tests and prepares prescription forms for medications or fluoride therapy and obtains Dentist's signature.
10. Cleans and disinfects operatory after each procedure. Disinfects, bags and seals ultrasonic instruments. Disposes of hazardous waste and toxic chemicals according to hospital policy. Arranges and coordinates equipment maintenance and repairs. Ensures maintenance and optimal instrument effectiveness for periodontal procedures.
11. Participates and assists in the coordination of research studies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited program in Dental Hygiene and 2 years experience in Clinical Dentistry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
NYS License in Dental Hygiene required.

Maintains expert level understanding of the Oral Medicine division. Trains new staff members. Assists in clinical research activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Patient Liaison:
- Serves as liaison, appointment coordinator, and patient advocate to assist in the coordination of scheduled visits. Prioritizes referral requests using department protocols, responding and immediately expediting most urgent requests.
- Ensures ancillary testing and other specialty referrals have been executed and results received. Coordinates and obtains all imaging, photos, blood work, etc. prior to scheduled appointment date.
Care Coordinator:
- Collaborates with all members of the care team to facilitate superior communication with the patient for best treatment outcomes. May perform complex appointment scheduling, linking referrals and ancillary services. Sends after-visit reports to internal and external referring providers and associated physicians/dentists. Maintains ongoing communication with all hospital referring departments (BMT, Hematology, Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology, Head & Neck Cancer, Cardiac Surgery).
- Coordinates the scheduling for all remote visits. Provides patient with an introduction to Oral Medicine, obtains all required medical documents, schedules telemedicine visits.
- Registers new patients in eRecord, obtains patient signatures for release of information, coordinates medical records with HIM, as appropriate.
- Assists in human subject recruitment and screening activities, including reviewing study site patient databases and office records for patients that meet the protocol inclusion criteria. May conduct telephone interviews to screen potential study candidates. Reviews medical chart history with Principal Investigator to verify inclusion criteria are met before enrollment.
- Enters study data and ensures for completeness of data entry.
- Performs other duties for Oral Medicine Chair as directed, including working on quality assurance and other special projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate's degree in related field preferred
- 3 years of administrative dental or medical office experience preferred; or
- Equivalent combination of education, training and experience required
- Strong working knowledge of computer-based systems: Epic, axi Um, Zoom, Microsoft Office, etc. preferred
- Strong customer service skills (via telephone and in person) required
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally required.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment required.
