This professional will work under the supervision of the Site Dental Director and will perform dental measures designed to preserve teeth and prevent the spread of disease. In addition, they will perform emergency diagnosis and provide oral health education to patients by performing some but not limited to the following duties. Open to Limited License Dentists as well as Hygienists. Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities: Prepare operatory for patient care by cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining equipment, sterilizing, and sharpening equipment. Greet the patient, making them feel at ease and comfortable. Take and record medical and dental histories and update personal information in the patient's chart. Expose and develop x-ray film. Make intra-oral impressions for study casts. Pour study models, trim, and make bleaching trays. Dispense bleach and inform the proper usage to patient. Perform full mouth periodontal probing or PSR on initial and appropriate subsequent visits. Record findings; note bleeding mobility, furcate involvement, and tissue tone in the patient's chart. Clean calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth supra and sub-gingivally. Scaling Root Planning and Periodontic maintenance cleanings, determine whether the patient needs a 3, 4, or 6-month recall. Apply fluorides and other decay-preventing agents to arrest dental decay. Polish and floss teeth Remove excess cement from the coronal surfaces of teeth. Evaluate emergency patient's oral issues. Provide clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health such as brushing, flossing, and other plaque control methods. Apply sealant to the surfaces of teeth per the diagnosis of the dentist. Prioritize activities and assignments as to their relative importance. Exercise care in the completion of work assignments and request direction when needed. Implement improvement measures and suggest ways to improve the efficiency of operation and working conditions. Attend all mandatory office and health center meetings. Works as part of a team and works at the Fitchburg Community Health Center as required. Under general supervision, provides a range of clinical, administrative and staff support. Assists in the performance of dental and radiography procedures, prepares and maintains dental equipment and supplies in accordance with established PCHC protocols and policies. Assists in the coordination of day-to-day patient administration, records management, and office support activities. Performs eligible clinical procedures at the request of site management. Assists in the clinical training of new and returning employees. Travels to other health center sites with staff Dentists. Duties & Responsibilities: * Provide chair-side assistance to dentist and/or dental hygienist in the performance of dental procedures, to include operative, preventive, periodontal, endodontic, prosthetic, and oral surgical procedures. * Prepare, sterilize, organize and set up dental instruments and equipment, ensures that all dental instruments are cleaned, dated, and processed according to established clinic guidelines and standards. * Monitors and maintains dental equipment, such as compressors, evacuator systems, radiographic developing equipment, sterilizers, and light-curing units, in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines. * Polish teeth of patients under 5 years of age, place sealants and apply fluoride (including varnish) without direct supervision by a Dentist. * Apply topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents, place/remove dental dams, place temporary restorations, remove excess cement on coronal surfaces, fabricate athletic mouth guards and occlusal guards without direct supervision by a Dentist. Qualifications: * Basic Life Support/CPR certification required. * Must maintain current CDA Certification, and successfully meet the requirements to be credentialed by PCHC. * Current knowledge of and ability to follow a full range of dental clinic procedures and protocols. * Ability to work as a team member with the PCHC dental clinic. * Knowledge of supplies, equipment and inventory control. * Knowledge of sterilization procedures. * Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards and protocols. * Ability to develop and process dental radiographs. * Ability to setup and prepare dental equipment and instruments in accordance with established clinical regulations and guidelines. * Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures. * Knowledge of PCHC institutional regulations and guidelines for the provision of dental outpatient services including scheduling and record maintenance. * Ability to work in a fast paced clinical environment where the early emphasis will be on Pediatric dentistry. * Effective telephone skills needed to receive/relay and place telephone calls continually throughout the day. * Clear diction and unhampered conversational skills for conversing with a multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual patient base. * Ability to perform duties/responsibilities across life cycle of patients (children, adolescents, adults and geriatric). * Ability to read, write, comprehend and speak both English and Spanish fluently. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance policy and procedure manuals. * Ability to communicate with people of various diverse backgrounds in a sensitive and compassionate way. Provides technical assistance during dental procedures and examinations according to established policies and procedures. Supports specialists in Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics or Orthodontics. Periodically performs procedures requiring certification including administering dental prophylaxis, under the supervision of a licensed provider. Acts as a resource for Dental Assistants. Key Responsibilities: * Greets and directs patients, provides routine information on procedures and escorts patients in and out of service area. Calms and soothes anxious/nervous or uncooperative patients throughout the course of their treatment. * Reviews schedule, planned procedures and additional equipment/instrument needs with assigned provider prior the start of the clinical session. * Prepares room and instruments for scheduled treatment. Mixes materials and passes instruments to dental provider as requested. As directed by a licensed provider, instructs patients on proper dental care and follow up. * Takes, develops, mounts and files dental radiographs that meet departmental standards for quality and readability. Understands proper positioning technique and other requirements when taking panoramic and/or cephalometric films. Checks quality of image and reviews with provider before re taking an image, to minimize exposure to radiation. Takes digital photographs as instructed. May scan physical non digital images into electronic dental record. * Charts teeth and conditions in patient's electronic dental record as directed by the licensed provider. * Maintains the cleanliness of patient areas, workrooms, and equipment. Cleans, disinfects, and maintains dental instruments and equipment. Handles sterile instruments and materials according to standard procedures. Ensures operatory is cleaned and disinfected prior to patient treatment. Monitors status of soiled utility room. Enlists other staff or contacts supervisor to perform routine tasks when needed. * Takes dental impressions and produces study models. Prepares models according to established procedure for delivery to outside lab facility. Logs lab case information upon submission and return. * Restocks dental supplies. Identifies and resolves discrepancies in lab cases sent or returned. Orders supplies if indicated. * Acts as a role model and resource for other dental assistants, providing orientation, training and guidance as appropriate. * May act as Lead Dental Assistant in his/her absence. Makes daily assignment of assistants to providers and assists in the smooth operation of the daily clinical sessions. Works with the session's Clinic Attending Dentist to allocate resources and respond to issues. Minimum Qualifications Current Massachusetts license as a Dental Assistant is required. Education: High School or equivalent AND Completion of a CODA Accredited Program Certificate Experience: Minimum 1 year experience. Certification/Registration Preferred: BLS certification or CPR/AED certification AND Board approved examination for DANB Radiation Health and Safety RHS AND CDA certification from the Dental Assisting National Board NANB. The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
