· Apply desensitizing and other topical agents to treat abnormalities to include caries prevention, gingivitis and oral ulceration.
· Instruct patients, individually and in groups, in proper oral hygiene care using materials to include teeth models, displays, slides, toothbrushes, dental floss, disclosing tablets and mirrors. Demonstrate proper techniques of brushing, flossing, and use of necessary periodontal aids. Explain the common causes of tooth decay and its relationship to general diet.
· Take impressions and construct sports/safety mouth guards and soft night guards for vital bleaching.
· Polish restorations and apply pit and fissure sealants.
· Chair side dental assisting when directed by the Officer-In-Charge of the dental clinic.
· Record patients treated. Check and maintain instruments to insure working condition. Clean, sharpen, and sterilize instruments.
· Patient Workload, Readiness, and Scheduling. Utilizes the Corporate Dental Application to enter patient specific workload and readiness status and also for patient scheduling
**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS**
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Essential Functions
Clinical:
* Examines patient's oral cavity including the mouth, throat, and pharynx, and records conditions of the teeth and surrounding tissues.
* Refers patients to the dentist who have anomalies such as decay, defective fillings, oral abnormalities, or periodontal disease.
* Applies desensitizing agents and other topical agents as needed.
* Performs complete oral prophylaxis including the following: seats and drapes the patients; performs supragingival and subgingival scaling using cavitron and universal scaling instruments to remove calculus deposits, accretions, and stains; polishes teeth using rubber prophy cups, and prophy paste; and applies topical fluorides, other anticariogenic agents and occlusal sealants. Cleans and polishes removable dental appliances worn by patients. Administers topical and local anesthesia. when necessary.
* Exposes, develops, and mounts dental radiographs including bite-wings, panoramic and periapical images. Interprets dental radiographs to determine areas of calculus deposits, decay, oral abnormalities, and periodontal bone loss involvement. Selects and arranges X-rays as teaching devises for viewing by patients.
* Records medical history and treatment administered.
* Maintains integrity of dental instruments to ensure sufficient working conditions. Sharpens dental instruments when necessary.
* Disinfects operatories and sterilizes dental instruments as stated in the Dental Clinic Policies and Procedures, the Tribes Public Health and Safety Plan and the Tribe's Exposure Control Plan.
* Prevents cross contamination of dental biohazards by adhering to proper disinfecting and disposal techniques of dental equipment and materials set by the Dental Clinic Policies and Procedures.
* Instructs patients, individually and in groups, in proper oral hygiene care using material such as teeth models, displays, toothbrushes, dental floss, disclosing tablets, mirrors, educational brochures and videos etc.
* Demonstrates proper oral hygiene techniques in brushing, flossing, and use of necessary periodontal aids.

* Aid in compliance of instruction of hazardous material communications and infection control procedures.
* Assist in developing and implementing Dental Clinic policies and procedures that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of services.

Job Summary
The Dental Assistant operates as an effective team member with dental clinic care providers and other front and back office support staff to provide quality dental treatment support, four-handed dentistry, oral health education, instrument repair and sterilization, facilities and equipment maintenance, and supply inventory & purchasing, in accordance with agency standards.

Graduate of a Dental Assisting program, or a foreign trained dentist working a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a dental assistant, or a Dental Assistant having worked no less than 500 hours of patient care time within the past 12 months while having received verifiable on-the-job training in a dental practice.
Experience
Preferred:
Customer service related experience working with the general public (1 year).
Experience in a multiple provider dental practice.
Digital imaging familiarity.
CDT-5 coding experience.
Healthcare information systems, such as electronic health record and practice management systems experience.
Working with low income, multi-ethnic populations.
Credentials
Dental Assistant registration with the State of Washington.
Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR/AED) certification must be obtained on the first day of hire.
Preferred:
Dental Assistant certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).
Job Specific Functions/Performance
Greets patients, interpreters and visitors, in person and by phone, in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner, to respond to inquiries, take messages, and provide accurate information regarding schedules and services.
Assists patients in completing all necessary forms, verifies contents, provides complete pre-op and post-op instructions, answers questions or refers as needed to the Dentists, and assures completion of pre-authorizations.
Works in tandem with the reception staff in managing interpretive services.
Assists the Dentists in determining dental problems and offering oral health education.
Assists Dentists with timely delivery of accurate and complete fee slips to receptionist for every patient encounter.
Monitors schedules and patient arrivals, participates in sequencing patients, and provides assistance to co-workers to maintain a smooth and efficient patient flow for entire clinic for maximum productivity.
Performs competently and independently all dental treatment procedures in use at CHC and allowable by Dental Assistants under Washington State Law.
Performs radiographic surveys as prescribed by the Dentists for diagnostic purposes (expose, develop, mount and label films.
Assists the Dentists chairside in providing dental care for patients utilizing efficient four handed dentistry techniques of instrument exchange, oral evacuation, tissue retraction, and materials preparation.
Opens and closes operatories and keeps operatories fully stocked, organized, and safe. Reprocess operatories and instruments following each patient encounter with promptness and efficiency. Prepares appropriate instruments and materials for each treatment procedure.
Maintains current knowledge of dental materials, dental procedures, oral hygiene procedures, and sterilization/disinfection procedures in use at CHC.
Follows established inventory and supply monitoring system and purchasing protocols for maintaining stock and ordering supplies as assigned.
Follows established protocols for routine cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, maintenance and repair of instruments and equipment.
Performs the duties of a Dental Receptionist, as needed, and assists with other departments when called upon.
Adheres to organizational infection control practices and written plan.
Adheres to attendance standards in order to perform the job functions for daily operations and/or continuity of patient care.
