However, work is performed under the supervision of the Clinic Dentist. Incumbent is expected to communicate (by phone or in person) in a courteous and professional manner at all times. Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency operations functions required of the incumbent include but are not limited to special needs shelters, Red Cross shelters, or other emergency functions. * Performs dental prophylaxis; scaling and root planning procedures; exposes dental radiographs, instructs patients in preventive dental techniques, including proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques; and applies dental sealants. * Plans, develops and conducts dental health education or prevention programs, including infection control and OSHA topics. Presents in-service training programs on Dental Health care practice for clinic and school. Develops and evaluates educational materials and resources. * Completes and maintains dental records of patients in accordance with County Health Department dental policies and state guidelines established for the dental program. Develops and maintains an effective and systematic patient recall system for all eligible patients. Is responsible for the implementation and utilization of this recall system. * Attends staff meetings and performs related work as required. * Complies with all Department of Health and Dental security and confidentiality rules and requirements. * This position serves a large population of Spanish /Creole speaking clients and employee may be required to perform interpreter duties, if bilingual. * Employee in this position maybe required to travel to all PCHD dental clinics to perform the above duties. * Other duties assigned by supervisor. POSITION SUMMARY The Dental Hygienist works both dependently and interdependently with the Dentist and dental assistant to provide superior quality, competitive value and outstanding service and care. Dental Hygienists provide excellent dental health care to patients of all ages; they perform routine administrative duties and direct patient care through oral examination and treatment of patients. GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Graduate of a dental hygiene college or school approved by the board or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Dental Association or its successor agency, if any, or any other dental hygiene program accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education or minimum of 4 years of postsecondary dental education and received a dental school diploma which is comparable to a D.D.S. or D.M.D. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Current Registered Dental Hygiene Certification (State of Florida Licensed) with minimum 2 years current experience Radiation Safety coursework and X-Ray Certification to meet Florida Radiography Requirements Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association Ability to work well in a team environment, remains motivated, is self-directed, and demonstrates initiative PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES Improves the oral health of patients through the delivery of periodontal therapies and other dental hygiene-related services Enhances the efficiency of the clinic by performing expanded duties as allowable by law and as directed by the Dentist Ensures all patient records and related documents are managed and maintained timely, accurately, and consistent with all HIPAA and related regulations and requirements Develops favorable relationships with all patients. Instructs patients and their family members on general oral health care and/or information related to post-treatment care as appropriate Establishes favorable working relationships with all staff members associated with clinic operations including front office personnel, dental assistants, dentists, and related staff Upholds and consistently represents the values and mission of the organization at all times. Represents the organization in a highly professional manner at all times. Ensures compliance and attention to all corporate policies and procedures Maintains licensure and CEUs as required Provides direct patient care and dental services as trained, licensed, and assigned Assesses dental condition and needs of patient using approved patient screening procedures, including medical history review, dental charting, and periodontal charting Completes patient chart within established standards. Verifies chart for completeness; enters all applicable data into the electronic medical record system (EMR)/electronic Dental record system Seats patients courteously, accurately records vitals, triages as necessary and prepares patient for hygiene services Educates patients in oral hygiene and dental care, including proper tooth brushing, flossing, nutrition and need for professional care Maintains daily patient flow to ensure patients will be seen as soon as possible using all available resources. Enters patient information and treatment in electronic medical record system (EMR)/electronic Dental record system Takes necessary diagnostic radiographs as indicated by treatment plan or provider Performs additional hygiene services, including but not limited to patient education, prophylaxis, debridement, scaling and root planing, gingival curettage and adjunct tasks delegable by provider Ensures all in office performed testing is recorded in appropriate log books Disposes of biohazard waste according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards Maintains supplies, equipment and sterilization of hygiene instruments. Maintains sterilization protocols and procedures and uses OSHA compliant techniques in sterilization and operatory preparation Assists with discharging patients at the end of the visit Works with business staff to ensure appropriate scheduling of patients and follow up Completes Additional responsibilities delegated by Dentist Takes ownership and represents Brevard Health Alliance's mission and organizational goals established by the executive committee. These include, but are not limited to: Productivity, Quality, Patient Satisfaction, and Employee Retention.
